Transport authorities in London together with Olympic Games officials have introduced Active Travel, a means whereby a range of measures will be adopted to make walking or cycling to London Olympics 2012 an easy affair. 18,800 free cycle parking spaces have been set up across all the various venues. 700 such spaces have been constructed in Olympic Park alone while onsite maintenance will also be available at Olympic Park, Box Hill, Hampton Court, Hadleigh Farm and Brands Hatch thus making it even easier and entirely convenient for cyclists.

Maps of the entire Olympic grounds have been set up at strategic locations to guide these cyclists along the path. One such family that is taking benefit of Active Travel program is the Walker family of Cheltenham who will see Jim Walker take a walking route along with his partner Bronwen and four children aged 6 to 18.

Bronwen Thornton said: “We’re really looking forward to walking to the Games and Noah is especially excited that he can bring his scooter with him to beat his brothers back to the hotel. It’s fantastic that there are such great routes for us to use. This way we know we get to burn off some of our own energy and make sure we don’t miss seeing any of the athletes burning theirs!”

This is the first time that such an environmentally friendly initiative is being taken by Olympic organization in alliance with Transport for London which is expected to see over 300,000 spectators either walking or cycling to and from their various locations during the entire stretch of the upcoming games.
