In a countdown to the 2nd Indian Grand Prix, Red Bull Racing partnered with Discovery Channel to premier Neel Jani’s Khardung- la, Ladakh, the highest motorable road in the world feat in an F1 car last year. This gripping and exciting feat was featured on Discovery Channel on Sunday 21st October 2012 at 8.00pm, in a bid to prove that no mountain is too high for Red Bull to climb.
Red Bull test driver Neel Jani took the Red Bull Formula One car on this challenging drive as they tackled the highest motorable road at a height of 18,380 ft. This makes the Red Bull Racing the first Formula One team to have ever managed to tackle this difficult and challenging terrain. Neel was greeted on the way by Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Mr. Omar Abdullah who flagged off a part of this feat. The car was specially modified for the occasion and was fitted with special tyres.
Neel Jani is a native of Switzerland and of Indian origin. He becomes the first driver to take on this challenge and drive a F1 car to the famous Khardung – la in a three day treacherous journey from Delhi to Leh. Special provisions were made to get the vehicle in conditions which included use of nitrogen in the air valve system instead of air as it contains less moisture. Exhaustive logistics were undertaken which involved transportation of the F1 car and 5 tons of equipment so as to enable Neel to undertake this journey and create a world record.
