In a bid to offer a luxury vehicle on a Mercedes Benz platform, Renault SA, the second largest auto manufacturer in France has entered into an agreement with Mercedes Benz. Both auto majors are currently working together as Renault is assisting Mercedes Benz’ Daimler AG in the setting up of Smart compact car and also deciding whether a model based on a Mercedes luxury vehicle can be offered as a luxury variant.

Speaking of these possibilities, Mr. Carlos Ghosn, Chief Executive Officer of Renault said that having one vehicle based on a Daimler platform would go a long way for the company. It was in January that a deal was announced involving both Renault and Daimler who would be coming together to develop four cylinder engines, which would be seen on Renault Nissan infinity models, and it is hoped that Mercedes would also use these engines in their upcoming models in the future.

It was also elaborated that Renault plans on bringing in three luxury models and will include the Espace full size minivan in 2014. Ghosn also suggested that the Mercedes based luxury Renault would be exclusively for French consumption.
