Renault sales hit record two year low, Duster 4×4 launch might bring revival

Renault sales hit record two year lowRenault India sales for the month of July 2014 stands at 3,015 units. This figure is their lowest since August 2012, i.e. the first month after Duster was launched. The break-up of sales reveals that Renault India sold 2,821 units of Duster, 10 units of Fluence, 2 units of Koleos, 93 units of Pulse and 89 units of Scala.

Even as on date, two years since it was launched, Renault Duster is the only product of the company that brings in decent sales. Renault Pulse continues to be overpowered by the Maruti Swift, and Hyundai i20, while Renault Scala hardly competes with rivals like Honda City and Hyundai Verna. Renault Fluence has lost buyers to Hyundai Elantra, Skoda Octavia and Toyota Corolla Altis while Renault Koleos competes with Hyundai Santa Fe and Toyota Fortuner, not seeing very encouraging sales results either.

To note the importance of Duster to the Renault lineup, Renault India launched One Lakh Limited Edition Duster which was priced at INR 9.99 lakh, ex-showroom all across India. This limited edition model was available only during the month of June this year. Prior to this, Renault introduced the Adventure Edition of 85 PS Duster which was similar in a number of respects to the 110PS Duster Adventure launched in February 2014. Now Renault has announced the Duster All Wheel Drive variant which will make its presence felt next month.

As far as future launches is concerned, Renault will launch a new small car and an MPV in the next 12 months, along with Duster 4×4. The small car will be in the form of a sub 4 lakh hatch competing with Maruti Alto and Hyundai on. The MPV will be in the form of Lodgy, another Dacia product which promises to be equally successful as the Duster. It will compete with Maruti Ertiga and Honda Mobilio.
