French car manufacturers Renault have targeted sales of between 30,000 to 35,000 units per annum while in 2013 they hope to increase this figure to 1 lakh units. Scala is Renaults fifth offering in the country and comes after Pulse, Fluence, Koleos and Duster all of which have been well received by the Indian consumer.
Renault Scala compares favorably with Maruti Suzuki SX4 which is also in the same price range and is powered by a 1.6 liter VVT engine offering 104 bhp and 1.3 liter diesel engine offering 90 bhp. Where Linea is concerned in a price range of Rs.7.05 lakhs to Rs.9.5 lakhs there are also two engine variants – 1.4 liter petrol and 1.3 liter diesel both mated to a five speed manual. Mitsubishi Cedia comes with only one engine option which is a 2 liter petrol priced at Rs. 8.24 lakhs to Rs.8.90 lakhs while Nissan Sunny also in the Rs.6 lakh to Rs.8.9 lakh range is offered in three petrol and two diesel options. In this case the 1.5 liter petrol offers 100 bhp while the diesel engine offers only 86 bhp.
Proof of its success will be revealed only once Scala hits the streets. However, judging from the fan following of 150,000 strong that Renault has on Facebook with products like Renault Duster, it is estimated that it will not be long before Renault figures amongst recognised brands in the Indian auto segment.
