Ford EcoSport bookings had already begun earlier this month while deliveries will commence from today itself. It is available in a choice of 7 color options and 38 accessories. Engine options include 1.5L petrol, 1.5L diesel and the revolutionary 1.0L EcoBoost. Of the three, only the 1.5L petrol will be offered with an optional automatic gearbox, whereas the others will only be available with manual transmission. Base price of EcoSport variants are – 1.5l Petrol – Rs 5.59 lakhs, 1.5l Diesel – Rs 6.69 lakhs, 1.0l EcoBoost – Rs 7.89 lakhs, and 1.5L Petrol Auto – Rs 8.44 lakhs. All prices are ex-showroom, New Delhi.
Petrol 1.5L will deliver 112 PS power and 140 Nm torque. The manual transmission variant will give a mileage of 15.8 kmpl, while the automatic delivers 15.6 kmpl. EcoSport Diesel 1.5L delivers 91 PS power and 204 Nm torque, with a mileage of 22.7 kmpl (most fuel efficient). EcoBoost EcoSport delivers the highest power, 125 PS and 170 Nm torque. It also delivers best in class mileage of 18.9 kmpl.
Due to its aggressive pricing, the all new Ford EcoSport will compete with Maruti Suzuki DZire, Honda Amaze and Renault Duster. It is priced to compete with premium hatchbacks and entry level sedans and SUVs in India. Though smaller in size, as compared to the Duster, the EcoSport will be loaded with features which are yet to be seen in its segment in India.
The Duster, its major rival sports two engine options. 1.6 liter petrol produced 103 bhp while its diesel engine has two power ratings of 85 bhp and 108 bhp. Where its petrol engine is concerned, the Ford EcoSport is a winner while the real competition lies in the 85 bhp diesel engined variant. The EcoSport is also cheaper than the Duster due to the fact that it is in the sub 4 meter category and takes advantage of certain price cuts which are levied on the Duster.
To be produced from the company plant in Maraimalai Nagar, Chennai, the Ford EcoSport is also being produced in company plants in Brazil and Russia while production is slated to commence in Ford plants in Thailand and Russia as well. However, it will be from the Chennai plant that exports to Europe will be effected. The long wait for launch was due to the fact that the company was ramping up supplies so as to ensure that buyers did not have to contend with long waiting periods.

The rear seats can be reclined in select models for greater comfort or easily folded down for additional cargo space. With the rear seats tumbled against the front seats, the boot space increases to 705 litres, big enough to fit a washing machine. On the Trend series and above, the rear seats can be split 60:40 to transport long objects such as flat-pack furniture while still carrying passengers at the back.
Revolutionary EcoBoost technology
Ford brings its globally acclaimed EcoBoost technology to India with the patented 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine on the all-new Ford EcoSport. The award-winning three-cylinder delivers power and performance of a traditional 1.6-litre engine but with an improvement in fuel economy by up to 20 percent.
The 2012 International Engine of the Year is tiny enough to fit on a sheet of A4 paper but produces 125 PS of power and peak torque of 170 Nm from 1,400 to 4,500 rpm. In India, the Ford EcoSport with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine achieves superior 18.9 km/L and emits 126 g/km of carbon dioxide1.
The Ford EcoSport will also be available with the fuel-economical 1.5-litre petrol engine with twin independent variable camshaft timing or a 1.5-litre diesel engine, well-suited to urban driving conditions.
To further improve fuel economy, the aerodynamic Ford EcoSport boasts an outstanding drag coefficient of 0.371.
Quality that speaks to all five senses
With a signature Ford face, dramatic rising beltline and a ready-to-pounce stance, the all-new Ford EcoSport conveys a dynamic spirit of energy in action. The spare tyre, with an exclusively designed wheel, is mounted on the tailgate as a classic SUV cue.
Inside, soft-touch fabrics, tight gaps and the global Ice Blue dashboard illumination all reinforce superior quality and craftsmanship. Controls and knobs are ergonomically placed while seats are designed to be soft enough for comfort and firm enough for longer journeys.
The cabin is also extremely quiet at high speeds, thanks to meticulous efforts to reduce noise, vibration and harshness. Add to this a very effective climate control system, and the customer will be very comfortable in the Ford EcoSport.
The Ford EcoSport’s compact sub-four metre dimensions and the electric power-assisted steering with Pull-Drift Compensation help drivers tackle the stress of city driving, be it parking in small spaces, manoeuvring in heavy traffic, or making tight U-turns.
The Ford EcoSport’s high ground clearance of 200 millimetres also means customers won’t have to worry about driving over speed bumps and potholes. And with its exceptional ability to wade through 550 millimetres of water, drivers can confidently drive through large pools of water, especially during the monsoon season.
Safety and driver assistance
The all-new Ford EcoSport has been designed to provide high levels of protection and driver support through a range of advanced features. About half of the urban SUV’s body structure is made up of high-strength steel and ultra-high-strength steel, such as boron steel, making the Ford EcoSport’s frame especially strong yet lightweight too.
The SUV’s array of airbags provides additional peace of mind. The Ford EcoSport offers airbags for the driver and front passenger, as well as side airbags and curtain airbags.
To take the stress out of driving, the Ford EcoSport comes with an array of driver-assist systems. Hill Launch Assist helps drivers make a perfect hill start whether it’s uphill or downhill, by holding the SUV for up to three seconds. This prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards or forwards while moving off from the slope, increasing driver confidence.
Advanced safety technologies such as Electronic Stability Program (ESP), which is available on models with the automatic transmission, also help customers remain in control of the Ford EcoSport at all times, especially on slippery roads. When it detects that the car is losing control, it automatically reduces engine power and selectively brakes individual wheels to stabilise the vehicle and keep it travelling on track. The Ford EcoSport’s ESP system includes the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) which prevents the wheels from locking up and helps the vehicle to stop quickly on slippery road surfaces.
Muscular and Classy, All-New Ford EcoSport Serves up A Contemporary and Dynamic Design
- Wearing a dynamic design form language, the all-new Ford EcoSport conveys a spirit of energy in motion with its sculpted bodylines, high-mounted trapezoidal grille, and slim headlamps
- The contemporary interior appeals to the senses with its soft-touch fabrics as well as superior quality and craftsmanship
- Not only are the seats on the Ford EcoSport soft enough for comfort and firm enough for long journeys, but the rear seats can also be folded and tumbled for class-leading cargo space
Goa, India, May 6, 2013 – Books may not be judged by their covers but the all-new Ford EcoSport can certainly be judged by its striking good looks. Its bold lines, contemporary shape and sophisticated interior all reflect its credentials as a capable, flexible and practical urban SUV.
The all-new EcoSport provides roomy space for five, a high driving position with outstanding visibility, a refined cabin environment engineered for quiet operation, carefully selected and matched materials, and a modern design ethos. It all adds up to make the Ford EcoSport a compelling alternative to the run-of-the-mill compact car.
“The all-new Ford EcoSport was designed for, and around, the customer,” said Ehab Kaoud, chief designer, Car Exteriors, Ford North America, who led the design of the compact urban SUV. “The choice of materials and the execution of the design elements were all made with the end user in mind.
“We designed the Ford EcoSport to go where you need it to be as you progress through the adventure of life. It is the urban SUV you will be proud to drive and own.”
At first glance, the distinctive and aerodynamic Ford EcoSport looks like it’s ready to pounce. The fluid, dynamic and refined lines of the compact SUV are clearly defined by Ford’s global design language.
A wide hood sweeps into sculpted bodylines, conveying a dynamic spirit of energy in motion. Modern, slim headlamps frame a high-mounted trapezoidal grille which gives the Ford EcoSport an element of pride and a signature Ford face. The lines of the headlamps stretch towards the rear, allowing the air to flow around them and improving the SUV’s aerodynamics. At the same time, the dynamic line that stretches from the hood to the A-pillar adds to the urban SUV’s contemporary appearance.
Moving to the side, blacked out B-pillars unify the windows into one elegant shape. The muscular beltline, formed by the windows and door creases, ascends as it runs to the rear of the car, adding to the sense of movement on the vehicle.
At the back, the large rear window wraps around to the sides along with oblique tail lamps. To keep the rear profile sleek, the tailgate handle was built into the tail lamp. A small black access button on the tailgate handle can be used to unlock the boot.
The spare tyre, with an exclusively designed wheel, is mounted on the tailgate as a classic SUV cue, as well as for practical reasons. This results in more available cargo space in the vehicle, and makes it easier for customers to lift heavy loads into the vehicle over the lower bumper.
In India, the Ford EcoSport will be available in an exciting rainbow of seven colours – Mars Red, Kinetic Blue, Sea Grey, Moondust Silver, Panther Black, Diamond White, and Chill.
The inside of the all-new Ford EcoSport follows the contemporary and creative lines on the outside. Controls and knobs are ergonomically placed while soft-touch fabrics, tight gaps and the global Ice Blue dashboard illumination all reinforce superior quality and craftsmanship.
The design team paid great attention to the smallest details inside the cabin, from seat fabrics to the grain on the door trim, to create an interior that appeals to the senses. If you look at the grain up close on the instrument panel and door trim, you’ll see little squares of varying sizes breaking up the uniformity and monotony of the dots. Inspired by cellular structures in plants, and named Squareflec, this grain gives the interior a very modern look.
The designers have also used insert fabrics with distinctive textures on the seats to differentiate one series from another. On the Ambiente series, they worked around the theme of “Techtronics” and included a fabric with a metallic yarn which gives the cloth more depth and a high-tech look. The colour and trim team named the fabric Patna after the capital of the Indian state of Bihar.
On the Trend series, the team was guided by the idea of “Modular” with geometric shapes. Part of the seat fabric is a circular knit called Beijin, inspired by China. The insert fabric, called Dali and inspired by India, is specially embossed to give the cloth a three-dimensional feel.
There are two options on the Titanium series – cloth and leather. For the cloth seats, the designers went for the motif of “Clay Art”, referencing painted pottery in China and Brazil. They used a microfiber fabric called Shanghai after China’s most populated city. Microfiber fabrics are extremely comfortable and easy to care for because they are water-repellent and resistant to stains. For customers opting for leather, the seats are clothed in premium Torino leather with contrasting Cabernet Red stitching.
Soft enough for comfort and firm enough for longer journeys, the seats on the all-new Ford EcoSport have been designed using Ford global standards which have been refined after intensive anatomical research. Customers will feel as though the seat is wrapping around them. The engineers shaped the seat contours to give enough support for the thighs and from the lower back to the upper back. They focused on giving the hips more support as that will help keep the driver stable in the seat instead of sliding around in it when taking corners or changing lanes at high speeds.
The high position of the driver’s seat offers good visibility as well as easy and comfortable access to the panel’s controls. The driver’s seat has four-way adjustment, along with lumbar support that can be customized to the exact millimetre to provide the precise lower back support that the driver needs. The anatomical cut-outs and side bolsters add to the ergonomics of the comfortable seat.
The rear seats are what set the all-new Ford EcoSport apart from its competitors. Unlike typical cars that use shoulder strikers to support the rear seat, the urban SUV has a free-standing rear seat. This means that passengers at the back can recline their seat for greater comfort.
Alternatively, if customers need more cargo space, they can adjust the rear seat back forward, or just fold and tumble the entire seat up for a flat load floor and class-leading cargo area. With the shingle head restraints, the driver doesn’t even have to remove them before tumbling the seats. And for those who want to carry both passengers and cargo, the rear seat in the Trend series and up can facilitate that by splitting 60:40.
The engineers reinforced the rear seats and the floor with high-strength steel to meet the strictest global safety standards. And all the seats have been tested to the max for durability, strength, stress as well as comfort to ensure that they have just the right level of support to cushion and hold the occupants even after extended use.
All-New Ford EcoSport Revolutionises Fuel-Efficient Power with Award-Winning 1.0-Litre EcoBoost® Engine
- All-new Ford EcoSport will be the first vehicle in India to feature the patented three-cylinder engine, whose power and performance rival a traditional 1.6-litre four-cylinder petrol engine while delivering superior fuel economy
- The Ford EcoSport will also be available with the 1.5-litre petrol engine with twin independent variable camshaft timing or a 1.5-litre diesel engine
- To further improve fuel economy, the aerodynamic Ford EcoSport boasts an outstanding drag coefficient of 0.371
Goa, India, May 6, 2013 – The all-new Ford EcoSport combines performance with economy, responsiveness with smoothness, thanks to an advanced powertrain range fronted by the award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost® engine.
The urban SUV is the first vehicle in India to feature the patented 1.0-litre three-cylinder engine, which introduces Ford’s global EcoBoost powertrain technology to the country for the first time.
The smallest engine in its class, Ford’s 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine is big on power, torque and refinement. Producing 125 PS of power and peak torque of 170 Nm, the quiet and smooth-running engine will deliver power and performance that rivals a traditional 1.6-litre petrol engine. With 25 percent fewer moving parts, the three-cylinder EcoBoost is able to deliver superior fuel economy and lower emissions. In India, the Ford EcoSport with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine achieves 18.9 km/L and emits 126 g/km of carbon dioxide1.
Tiny enough to fit on a sheet of A4 paper or stow away in an airplane overhead luggage compartment, the 1.0-litre EcoBoost enhances Ford’s growing global family of EcoBoost engines which includes 1.5-, 1.6- and 2.0-litre four-cylinders, and two 3.5-litre V6 variants.
Ford’s EcoBoost technology, which holds more than 125 patents, combines direct fuel injection, turbocharging and variable valve timing to enable a downsized engine to gain fuel economy by up to 20 percent over larger engines with no loss of performance.
“We believe our customers will be delighted by how the junior member of the EcoBoost engine family punches above its weight,” said Kumar Galhotra, vice president, Product Development, Ford Asia Pacific. “When they start and drive the Ford EcoSport, they will notice how quiet the engine is, how quickly the SUV accelerates, and how little fuel it needs.”
The little engine that can
The 1.0-litre EcoBoost is unlike any engine in Ford’s history spanning more than a century. Not only is it the company’s first three-cylinder engine but it also has the highest power density of any Ford production engine.
Typical three-cylinder engines are inherently off-balance and out of sync, causing unpleasant vibrations. More than 200 engineers based at Ford’s technical centres in Dunton, U.K., and Merkenich, Germany worked their magic to transform the three-cylinder into the smooth and refined 1.0-litre Ford EcoBoost.
The traditional solution to reducing shaking forces in small-displacement engines is to install a counter-rotating balance shaft inside the motor that cancels out most vibrations. But that adds to weight, costs, and reduces fuel economy.
The engineers came up with a smart alternative. They deliberately unbalanced the pulley and flywheel with weights placed precisely to counteract the natural shaking forces of the engine and drive the energy in a less sensitive direction. The engine mounts are also designed to decouple as well as absorb the engine’s shaking forces.
The 1.0-litre EcoBoost also debuts many new technologies never before seen in a Ford vehicle such as:
- The super-small, light, and extremely responsive turbocharger delivers power quickly when the throttle is open from low rpm. The turbocharger’s ability to reach nearly 250,000 rpm results in virtually no turbo lag and the engine’s peak torque of 170 Nm over 1,400-4,500 rpm is more than enough for drivers to pull away and overtake easily
- The exhaust manifold is cast into the cylinder head so the exhaust gases can be water-cooled to enable optimum fuel-to-air ratio across a wider rev band
- The unique cast iron block warms the engine quicker than a conventional aluminium block, cutting the amount of “warm-up” energy required by 50 percent and increasing fuel economy
- The “split-cooling” system has separate thermostats for the cylinder head and block to allow quick warm-up
- Two main engine drive belts are immersed in oil to deliver a quieter, more efficient engine while the variable oil pump ensures optimal oil pressure across the full speed range
These innovations resulted in the 1.0-litre EcoBoost being voted the 2012 International Engine of The Year by a jury of 76 journalists from 36 countries, winning by the largest voting margin in the award’s history.
More choices for fuel-efficient power
The all-new Ford EcoSport will also be available with the global 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, which delivers peak power of 112 PS at 6,300 rpm and peak torque of 140 Nm at 4,400 rpm.
The petrol engine features the twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) technology, which allows extremely precise, variable control of “valve overlap” – the window of time in which both the intake and exhaust vanes in an engine are open at the same time. By adjusting overlap continuously, the engine can operate at optimum settings for peak fuel economy or power output as conditions demand.
Another benefit of this technology is a broadened torque curve. The Ti-VCT strategy allows the intake valve to be advanced, so instant power is delivered when the customer demands it at low speeds. At high speeds, the intake cam is retarded and higher airflows are available. For the driver, this means improved low-speed torque and increased fuel economy.
Moreover, Ti-VCT facilitates an “internal exhaust gas recirculation” effect, reducing nitrogen oxide (a contributor to smog) and hydrocarbon emissions throughout the engine’s operating range.
For customers who prefer diesel, the 1.5-litre TDCi intercooled and turbocharged diesel engine fits the bill perfectly. With power rated at 91 PS at 3,750 rpm, the engine also delivers an outstanding 204 Nm of torque from 2,000 rpm to 2,750 rpm. The result is strong acceleration from standstill together with the flexibility that can reduce the need for gearshifts. The compact fixed-geometry, low-inertia turbocharger and intercooler provide optimised performance, particularly at low speeds.
The Bosch high pressure fuel-injection system, a mass air-fuel sensor, electric exhaust gas recirculation valve, electronic turbocharger waste gate control and exhaust catalyst all combine to give the engine a superior performance, higher fuel economy and lower emissions.
To further improve fuel efficiency, the five-speed manual transmission is standard with the 1.0-litre EcoBoost engine as well as the 1.5-litre diesel engine. The TDCi engine delivers a class-leading fuel economy of 22.7 km/L and carbon dioxide emissions of 117 g/km1.
The 1.5-litre Ti-VCT engine can be mated to either the five-speed manual transmission or smooth six-speed Ford PowerShift automatic transmission. With a stick shift, the 1.5-litre Ti-VCT engine returns 15.8 km/L and carbon dioxide emissions of 150 g/km1. With the PowerShift automatic, the petrol engine returns 15.6 km/L and carbon dioxide emissions of 151 g/km1.
The advanced six-speed PowerShift automatic transmission combines the efficiency, optimised gear ratios and responsive performance of a traditional manual transmission with the smoothness, convenience and ease-of-use of a conventional automatic. Low-friction dry clutches are employed, combined with six well-spaced gears to provide responsive acceleration from rest, smooth transitions between gears and optimised fuel economy when cruising.
All the engines are BS-IV emission compliant, meeting the highest emission standards in India.
An aerodynamic shape
Unlike passenger sedans, an SUV does not naturally lend itself to an aerodynamic shape. That’s why the design and engineering teams spent a year and a half shaping the body of the all-new Ford EcoSport to make it more efficient when slicing through the air.
They spent 160 hours in the wind tunnel tweaking mere millimetres and put in more than 10,000 hours on computational fluid dynamics simulations to find the perfect silhouette. Their hard work resulted in an outstanding drag coefficient of 0.371 on the Ford EcoSport.
Some examples of the aerodynamic actions include:
- A slight rise at the end of the hood to eliminate areas of turbulence
- Front baffle built into the bumper to avoid recirculation of air and improve airflow under the vehicle
- Improved sealing between the hood and the front grille
- The raked A-pillar and tilted side mirrors are designed to also reduce wind noise
- Air deflectors in front of the rear tyres
- D-pillar kicker to propel air flow
“From a slippery, fuel-efficient shape to engines that are both powerful and fuel-economical, every possible effort has been made to ensure that the all-new Ford EcoSport takes you to where you want to go, without hurting your pocket,” said Galhotra.
Intuitive and Versatile, All-New Ford EcoSport Loads Up On Smart Features and Stowage Spaces
- All-new Ford EcoSport delivers an instinctive in-car experience with high-tech features such as Ford SYNC® which allows drivers to use their mobile phone and select music hands-free, as well as Smart Keyless Entry which lets them unlock the car door and start the engine without having to use a key
- Ford EcoSport will be the first-ever vehicle in India to offer a potentially life-saving Emergency Assistance feature, which automatically connects vehicle occupants with emergency services following an accident

Goa, India, May 6, 2013 – The all-new Ford EcoSport puts the fun and convenience back into driving with a raft of innovative segment-first technologies.
The urban SUV’s blend of versatility and smart connectivity ensures that customers will have space for their gear and easy access to their phone and music. The Ford EcoSport also takes the stress out of driving with an array of driver-assist features that keep the driver in firm control of the vehicle at all times.
One of the highlights is Ford SYNC®, the voice-activated in-car connectivity system powered by Microsoft. First in Ford EcoSport’s segment, the award-winning system enables drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road while choosing their favourite music and making phone calls using voice commands. The SYNC button, the main radio and phone controls are all on the steering wheel, making information readily available at the driver’s fingertips.
SYNC also features Emergency Assistance, which enables SYNC to help occupants place a call to the emergency services directly in the event of an accident. The Ford EcoSport is the first ever vehicle in India to offer this advanced and potentially life-saving system.
The Ford EcoSport’s digital audio system includes a CD/MP3 player, USB and auxiliary slots, iPod connectivity, Bluetooth® connection, and a 3.5-inch display screen. It is even smart enough to automatically adjust the audio volume according to the speed of the vehicle, so that it isn’t too loud when the driver slows down or too soft at higher speeds.
“The all-new Ford EcoSport is extremely intuitive as it anticipates your needs and wants,” said Kumar Galhotra, vice president, Product Development, Ford Asia Pacific. “It gives customers smart features that keep them connected while improving safety and comfort behind the wheel.”
Full of modern features, the all-new Ford EcoSport makes life easier for customers. Drivers no longer need their keys ready either to unlock the SUV or to start its engine. They can just leave the key in their pocket or bag.
With Smart Keyless Entry, the doors unlock automatically as the driver pulls the door handle, particularly useful when in a hurry or carrying heavy loads. Once inside, a press of the Ford Power Start button, while pressing the clutch down, gets the engine going. Drivers will not have to be annoyed over having a bunch of keys dangling at knee level.
Customers get extra “eyes” at the back with four ultrasonic rear parking sensors that will beep with increasing frequency as the Ford EcoSport reverses close to the obstacles. The multi-function display also shows the driver where the obstacles are and gives visual cues of the distance between the SUV and the obstacles. Allowing the drivers to “see” as well as “hear” how much space they have at the rear gives them greater confidence when reversing.
The Ford EcoSport’s trip computer not only provides information on average speed, average fuel economy and distance to empty but it also teaches drivers to drive smarter with an instant fuel consumption graphic bar. When customers arrive home at night, they can feel safer with the SUV’s follow-me-home lights which remain on for a minute after the engine is turned off to illuminate the way ahead.
There are 20 intelligent storage spaces in the all-new Ford EcoSport that total more than 21 litres, most of which are easily accessible by the driver. The storage areas include:
- A glove box that can keep up to six beverage cans cool
- A handy strap on the driver’s sun visor for parking or toll tickets
- A sunglasses holder in overhead console
- A centre console with two cup holders, a 12-volt power outlet that can be used for charging mobile phones, auxiliary input, USB ports for connecting MP3 players
- A drawer under the front passenger seat that is big enough for a laptop computer
- Front door bins that can hold 1.5-litre bottles and 600ml bottles
- Rear door bins that hold 600ml bottles
- Map pockets on the back of the front seats
On top of the practical storage spaces, the Ford EcoSport also offers flexible cargo space in the rear, depending on the customer’s needs. The rear seats can be reclined for greater comfort or easily folded down for additional cargo space. With the rear seats tumbled against the front seats, the boot space increases to 705 litres, big enough to fit a washing machine. On the Trend series and above, the rear seats can be split 60:40 to transport long objects such as flat-pack furniture while still carrying passengers at the back.
Safety and driver assistance technologies
To take the stress out of driving, the Ford EcoSport comes with an array of driver-assist systems, such as Hill Launch Assist and Electronic Stability Program, both of which are available on models with automatic transmission.
Hill Launch Assist helps drivers make a perfect hill start whether it’s an uphill or downhill slope, by holding the SUV for up to three seconds while the driver’s foot moves from the brake to the accelerator pedal. This prevents the vehicle from rolling backwards or forwards while moving off from the slope, increasing driver confidence.
Electronic Stability Program (ESP) assists customers to remain in control of the Ford EcoSport, especially on slippery roads. A vehicle can end up veering off course when the road is wet or if it is cornering when there is insufficient grip. It may understeer, where the car continues moving forward despite the driver trying to turn it, or it may oversteer, where the car turns further than the driver intended, causing the rear wheels to slide and the car to spin or fishtail.
The system can correct both situations with high-tech sensors that continuously monitor the vehicle’s direction against the driver’s intention. By the time the driver next blinks, ESP has already monitored the road ahead about 100 times. Once it detects that the car is losing control, it automatically reduces engine power and selectively brakes individual wheels to stabilise the vehicle and keep it travelling on track. This system is also useful in situations where the driver has to make emergency manoeuvres, such as a sudden lane change to avoid an accident, as ESP will kick in and maintain vehicle stability.
The Ford EcoSport’s ESP system includes the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) which prevents the wheels from locking up and helps the vehicle to stop quickly on slippery road surfaces. When the driver applies the brakes quickly in an emergency situation, Emergency Brake Assist will provide additional pressure to the brake system to increase the braking force and reduce the distance required for the vehicle to stop. At the same time, the Emergency Brake Light feature will flash the indicator lights to warn other drivers during emergency braking.
All-New Ford EcoSport Brings SYNC to India
- The all-new Ford EcoSport is the first vehicle in its segment in India to feature Ford SYNC® connectivity platform
- The award-winning SYNC system provides customers the convenience and flexibility to control their media players and mobile phones via voice commands
- The Ford EcoSport will also be the first-ever vehicle in India to offer the SYNC-based Emergency Assistance feature, which automatically connects vehicle occupants with emergency services following an accident
Goa, India, May 6, 2013 – The all-new Ford EcoSport will be the first vehicle in its segment in India to feature SYNC®, Ford’s award-winning in-car connectivity system that allows customers to safely and conveniently make phone calls or play their favourite music using voice commands.
Using the hands-free technology of SYNC, powered by Microsoft, customers can connect their mobile phone or digital media player to their Ford EcoSport via Bluetooth® or USB. Drivers can use either steering wheel-mounted controls or voice commands to manage the system’s features.
SYNC’s debut in India with the Ford EcoSport also brings in a segment- and industry-first feature called Emergency Assistance, which has the potential of saving lives. The advanced feature enables SYNC to help occupants place a call to the emergency services directly in the event of an accident. Free for the life of the vehicle, this vehicle-based, no-cost, non-subscription call-for-help system provides owners additional peace of mind when travelling.
More than five million Ford cars and trucks have been sold with SYNC since it was introduced in 2008, and with it becoming increasingly available in Asia and Europe, is projected to be fitted on an additional nine million vehicles by 2015.
“SYNC has been a transformational technology not only for Ford, but also for the entire industry,” said Rod Phillips, engineering manager, SYNC, Ford Asia Pacific.
“SYNC has been integral to keeping pace with the consumer, delivering value through smart and convenient features that helps keep them connected to their digital lives in a safer, simpler and smarter way.”
Partnering with Microsoft
SYNC was co-developed by Ford and Microsoft. The collaboration between the two companies goes back more than seven years, bringing together their respective expertise in software and automotive innovation.
“Ford has had a longstanding partnership with Microsoft, and together we have been pioneers in developing and delivering world-class voice-activated connectivity systems for Ford customers around the world,” said Phillips.
At the heart of SYNC is Microsoft’s Windows Embedded Automotive, a powerful and reliable software platform which allows Ford to deliver a comprehensive package of control and connectivity options, as well as innovative features and functionality that deliver an engaging user experience for customers.
“With SYNC, Ford and Microsoft were the first to recognise that people want to bring their personal devices with their own content into the car, rather than embed it.,” said Chris Elliott, senior product marketing manager, Microsoft Corp. “SYNC is built on an updateable platform enabling Ford and Microsoft to continuously evolve the product, adding support for the latest devices and offer new capabilities that take advantage of latest innovations in consumer technology.”
Ford’s open platform approach to mobile device connectivity has helped SYNC stand out in the industry for its ease of use. Unlike embedded connectivity systems, SYNC does not allow access to the user’s stored contact information unless his or her phone is connected, hence ensuring a high level of privacy.
Using Bluetooth technology, SYNC can wirelessly connect up to 12 different mobile phones to the all-new Ford EcoSport through a process called pairing. Once paired, SYNC will automatically transfer all the names and numbers in the phone’s contact list to the in-vehicle system and automatically updates phonebook entries whenever the phone is brought back into the vehicle.
SYNC enables customers to continue their mobile phone conversation as they get into the car – without the need to hang up – as the system will instantly connect to the Bluetooth-enabled phone once the car is started. A microphone inside the cabin allows consumers to use their mobile phone hands-free while driving.
By seamlessly integrating with the mobile phone, SYNC includes the same features offered on the phone, including caller ID, call waiting, conference calling, a caller log, contact list, a signal strength icon and a phone battery charge icon – all conveniently shown on the new Ford EcoSport’s centrally-located display screen. Making a phone call is as simple as pushing a button and saying someone’s name.
SYNC can recognize the user’s ringtone on supported phones and play it when a call comes in. If unique ring tones have been selected to identify specific callers, SYNC will automatically play those too.
SYNC can also read aloud incoming SMS text messages from compatible phones, including popular abbreviations and emoticons such as LOL (laugh out loud) and 😀 (smiley big smile). Using voice activation, the driver can also safely send a reply from a predetermined list of 15 responses while on the move.
SYNC works with a variety of digital music players, including iPod and USB flash drives, and audio files can be browsed by genre, artist, album, song and playlist using simple voice commands. SYNC can even put together a playlist of the music the driver is in the mood for with the “Play similar” command. The SYNC USB port also simultaneously charges the player as the music is being played.
Additionally, SYNC can wirelessly stream the user’s music collection on the mobile phone to the new Ford EcoSport’s sound system via Bluetooth. All music played through SYNC is high-resolution digital quality.
Voice control improvements
Indian customers who are already familiar with the Bluetooth with Voice Control system on the Ford Figo and Ford Fiesta will find that SYNC takes in-car connectivity to another level.
Other than being able to automatically transfer contact information from the mobile phone to the Ford EcoSport, SYNC can recognise up to 150 unique voice commands and cope with variations in accents and vocabulary. This allows users to take fewer steps and utilise more conversational commands to control SYNC features, making it easier to access more content by voice.
In India, SYNC will be available in UK English. Ford has been working with its voice technology partner and industry leader Nuance Communications to find a way to make voice recognition even easier and more intuitive for drivers to successfully use, especially first-timers.
Nuance’s natural text-to-speech technology is also behind “Serena”, the female voice of SYNC’s UK English version, providing drivers with a more natural, conversational experience with their Ford vehicle. All these refinements are designed to encourage drivers to take advantage of the hands-free capabilities of SYNC and keep their focus on driving.
“We know people want to stay connected in their vehicles, so Ford is continuing to deliver that connectivity for them responsibly and safely,” said Phillips. “We aim to make the voice-activated SYNC as easy to use as possible so that drivers can keep their hands on the wheel and eyes on the road.”
Rugged and Capable, All-New Ford EcoSport Is Always Ready For Work and Play
- All-new Ford EcoSport offers a high driving position, exceptional water-wading capability and superior ground clearance, giving customers the confidence to drive through obstacles, making it the perfect vehicle for urban and out-of-town exploring
- Fitted with an electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system, which delivers precise steering with a natural and confident feel, Ford EcoSport makes it easy to negotiate narrow city streets or twisty roads
- Ford EcoSport combines best-in-class levels of interior quietness, an efficient automatic climate control system, and a smooth ride to give customers an enjoyable and fun journey
Goa, India, May 6, 2013 – The all-new Ford EcoSport is always ready to go where the road leads, be it through narrow city streets or up winding mountain passes.
With its high ground clearance, exceptional water-wading capability, refined ride and smooth handling, the urban SUV is perfect for discovering new places in town as well as exploring the country.
The Ford EcoSport offers a high sitting position that gives the driver good visibility of the road ahead. Its ground clearance of 200 millimetres means customers won’t have to worry about driving over speed bumps and potholes. This is complemented by superior breakover and approach angles of 25 degrees and a departure angle of 35 degrees. With an outstanding ability to wade through 550 millimetres of water, drivers can confidently drive through large pools of water, especially during the monsoon season.
To give customers peace of mind when driving the Ford EcoSport, the engineers put the SUV through an exhaustive testing process during its development. Almost 20,000 computer-aided assessments were conducted during the virtual phase, with hundreds of iterations to optimise solutions. The urban SUV also racked up more than 20 lakh kilometres in more than 12,000 road and laboratory tests held in South America, North America, Asia and Europe. Some of these tests were conducted in temperatures from -25 to 50 degrees Celsius and at altitudes of up to 4,300 metres.
“We tested the all-new Ford EcoSport to the extreme so that customers know they can depend and rely on the SUV to take them to places,” said Kumar Galhotra, vice president, Product Development, Ford Asia Pacific. “With its high ground clearance and superior water-wading capability, the Ford EcoSport is well-suited for exploring.”
Nimble and agile
The all-new Ford EcoSport is fitted with an electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system with Pull-Drift Compensation, which delivers precise steering with a natural and confident feel. More than 90 parameters have been carefully tuned to deliver accurate responses at high speed while remaining light and manageable in parking manoeuvres. The steering is also intelligent enough to vary its assistance based on vehicle speed, steering wheel angle, cornering forces and acceleration or deceleration.
Because the belt-driven power steering pump is eliminated, EPAS results in a quieter vehicle with fewer components drawing engine power. The EPAS steering system also reduces fuel consumption by at least three percent compared to a conventional hydraulic power steering system.
EPAS also enables new technologies that adjust for minor driving annoyances. Pull-Drift Compensation detects road conditions – such as a crowned road surface or blustery crosswinds – and adjusts the EPAS system to help the driver compensate for the pulling and drifting these conditions can cause. Active Nibble Control helps reduce vibrations that transfer through the steering wheel. This feature senses and eliminates the “shimmy” felt at high speeds when a wheel is out of balance or a brake rotor is warped. Both software-based technologies are designed and integrated to be seamless and unnoticeable to the driver.
The steering accuracy of the EPAS system is particularly useful when negotiating narrow city streets. The Ford EcoSport’s tight turning circle of 10.65 metres also makes navigating urban traffic easier, especially when making U-turns on streets with cars parked on both sides.
Cool, quiet and refined
Paying special attention to passenger comfort in the Ford EcoSport’s cabin, the engineers developed an air-conditioning system that is so effective that it can cool the cabin from 65 degrees Celsius – the interior temperature of a car that has been sitting in the afternoon sun – to under 30 degrees Celsius in just 10 minutes. The automatic climate control system uses inputs from the sun load sensor, ambient temperature and integrated in-car temperature sensor to adjust and maintain the desired temperature in the cabin.
Given that air-conditioning can affect fuel economy, the engineers used a new compressor technology that requires less energy, so that the occupants can enjoy cool comfort without burning a hole in the pocket. To ensure the Ford EcoSport’s climate control system can handle all weather conditions, it was tested in temperatures from -20 to 50 degrees Celsius, at humidity levels between 20 and 85 percent, and went through at least 1,000 wind tunnel tests.
The second thing that Ford EcoSport occupants will realise after getting into the SUV is how quiet it is. The engineers took painstaking effort to prevent noise, vibration and harshness from intruding into the cabin. They spent countless hours tweaking computational fluid dynamics models and testing vehicle shapes in the wind tunnel for one that reduces wind noise.
They put in sound-deadening materials in the doors, roof and body to minimise noise from making its way into the cabin. To reduce the chance of leaks and whistles, the team used a double-sealing system for the doors and applied new technologies for improved glass sealing. Inside the cabin, the urban SUV has an acoustic headliner that helps absorb ambient noise.
The result is impressive – the all-new Ford EcoSport boasts remarkable levels of interior quietness. The articulation index – which measures how easily passengers can converse in the cabin – is the top in its segment even at speeds of up to 130 km/h. This means that passengers can continue to chat with one another without having to raise their voices even when travelling on the highway.
In addition, the suspension geometry in the Ford EcoSport has been specially designed for an urban SUV. Dampers and springs have been tuned to achieve an optimal balance of steering, handling and ride. Typically, the design of a vehicle suspension involves a difficult compromise between ride comfort and handling but the engineering team used dampers with a hydraulic rebound stop to combine more of both qualities in the vehicle.
The hydraulic rebound stops use hydraulic fluid to dissipate energy when the damper approaches its full extension. The technology can reduce the peak force by two to three times compared to traditional mechanical rebound stops, providing a smoother ride for the customers and preventing damage to the vehicle or suspension. This also helps avoid noise when driving through speed bumps. At the same time, the team engineered excellent stability into the Ford EcoSport by reducing the roll gradient, or how much the car rolls while steering.
The tyres on the Ford EcoSport have also been developed to provide an ideal balance between low rolling resistance, compliance and grip. The low-rolling resistance tyres not only help reduce fuel consumption but also reduce road noise and deliver outstanding driving dynamics.
Elevating Ownership and Brand Experience with the All-New EcoSport
- All-new Ford EcoSport will be supported by a well thought out strategy of robust and well-tested components and spares and faster, affordable and timely service
- Innovative ‘Child Parts’ strategy, competitive pricing and specially developed durable parts plus technologically advanced powertrains contribute to amazingly low Cost of Ownership (CoO)
- Pioneering initiatives like Quick Service Bay, Roadside Assistance (RSA) and Quick Lane to elevate customer experience across a rapidly expanding service network
Goa, India, May 6, 2013 – The all-new Ford EcoSport rolling into India does stand out with its strikingly good looks inspired by Ford’s design philosophy in an attractive package of power and performance, but it also aims to enhance the customer brand experience with Ford’s vision of providing a low Cost of Ownership and service over time.
As one of the latest products on Ford’s global platform, the urban SUV will be supported by a well thought out strategy of robust and well-tested components and spares, service footprint expansion and faster and timely service that will pleasantly surprise the customers.
“We have evolved significantly and building on the trust with consumers by emphatically and closely listening to service needs – of the Indian customer during ownership and service trips in the years after the Figo’s successful launch here to bring in a service evolution”, explains PK Umashankar, vice president of Customer Service Operations, Ford India.
“Reducing Cost of Ownership is an intensive and continuous process. It is our strategic imperative and we have seen great resonance with Figo and Classic owners. Ford’s commitment is to offer products that make value sense and take a quantum leap towards low cost of ownership with reduced service intervals, enhanced durability and reliability, superior fuel efficiency and an ever increasing service,” Umashankar added.
To offer this, Umashankar pointed out Ford has worked hard on a three-pronged vision of efficient technology and parts design, service innovations and network expansion.
Efficient technology and parts design
Three class-leading powertrains, including the internationally acclaimed EcoBoost, will power the EcoSport range in India, offering amazing and superior fuel-efficiency and thus a low running cost over the entire ownership lifecycle.
Despite its small capacity and proportions, the EcoBoost engine delivers power and performance that will rival a traditional 1.6-litre petrol engine while emitting less than 140g/KM CO2. It will have 125 PS of power giving the Ford EcoSport a footprint that is small enough for urban driving yet robust enough for a trip out of the city.
The proven 1.5 litre TiVCT petrol and 1.5 litre TDCi diesel engines deliver exceptional power, amazing fuel efficiency and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. In the automatic version of the TiVCT, its PowerShift transmission is equipped with an innovative ‘dry’ dual clutch comes with lifetime freedom from oil-change, further contributing to lower CoO.
Being produced on a global platform, the all-new EcoSport benefits from the huge economies of scale in terms global sourcing that benefits the customer. With more service parts and components being produced locally in India by Ford as well as key suppliers, the availability and affordability of parts has greatly increased.
Applying its learnings from the Figo, Ford has introduced ‘Child Parts’ on the EcoSport that do not call for replacing entire assemblies. For example, the door skin can be replaced instead of the entire door assembly. The front bumper comes as three separate Child Parts allowing cheaper replacement. The side mirror scalps can be replaced instead of the total mirror assembly.
“With heavy road congestion, door damage repair is both frequent and quite expensive for the Indian customer,” explains Umashankar. “In many instances, simply replacing the door skin with rather than the entire door assembly can save customers a substantial amount of money due to our reduced labour costs.”
Regular service is important to the longevity of the vehicle and Ford engineers have designed key components and maintenance schedules to help keep the cost of ownership as low as possible.
Among items such as fuel filter and fluid replacement, including transmission oil, brake and clutch fluids, drive belt and engine coolant, the all-new EcoSport is expected to be class leading due to the infrequent service that is required on those items. Additionally, the engine’s spark plug is designed to perform efficiently with a longer replacement interval.
Pioneering service innovations
Providing easy and quick service for the all-new EcoSport also has been addressed with more dealerships adding Quick Service bays and Ford- pioneered “ Quick Lane “ service that takes customer experience to the next level in terms of comfort and convenience.
The new Quick Service bays are staffed by a pair of technicians and stocked with fast moving parts required for normal service and maintenance within arm’s reach. Quick Lane offers choice, transparency and convenience for basic quick services and light repairs. Ford plans to take these concepts to more cities and towns across India by year-end.
The All New Ford Ecosport will carry a 2 year / 100,000 KM warranty. The vehicle also comes with a two year Roadside Assistance (RSA) support, available through a national toll-free number that covers as much as 85 percent of the customer base and provides on-site assistance for minor repairs including fuel delivery, jumpstart, vehicle unlocking and towing.
Customers can extend their vehicle warranty up to four years from date of purchase by purchasing Ford Extended Warranty. They can also avail extended packages such as Scheduled Service plans and Total Maintenance plans. Ford’s Service Holiday is a customized product covering Scheduled Service and Non-Scheduled repairs up to three years at a reduced rate. Fully transferable, the plan protects against inflation on the covered components and labour costs.
Extended reach of service
With 260 outlets at over 138 cities and towns of India, the Blue Oval is fully geared up to meet service needs of customers. Further, to support upcountry locations, Ford’s Mobile Service Vans will be available at around 20 locations. With new parts distribution centres in Chennai, Manesar, Mumbai and Kolkata, the customers can get the right parts, on time, every time.
“Whether it is amazing fuel-efficiency, ease of service availability, frequency and cost of service, and the replacement cost of critical parts, customers will be pleasantly surprised with the entire EcoSport ownership experience,” Umashankar concluded.
Emergency Assistance a Segment First for India with All-New Ford EcoSport
- Emergency Assistance can help connect vehicle occupants with emergency services following an accident, providing vehicle location and open line communication
- SYNC® Emergency Assistance technology is already available in more than 5 million Ford vehicles globally
- Ford will be the first auto manufacturer in India to offer this advanced technology feature in this category of vehicles when the all-new Ford EcoSport goes on sale in India.
GOA, India, May 6, 2013 – Ford India will be the first auto manufacturer and EcoSport will be the only vehicle in its segment to offer a potentially life-saving Emergency Assistance system when the urban SUV goes on sale in the country.
Emergency Assistance is a vehicle-based, no-cost, non-subscription call-for-help system that is already available in more than 5 million Ford vehicles globally, providing owners peace of mind when travelling. The service is provided free for the ownership cycle of the vehicle.
“We’re so excited about being the first automaker to provide this technology where EcoSport will be uniquely positioned amidst segment players,” said Joginder Singh, president and managing director, Ford India.
Emergency Assistance works by delivering a critical voice message directly to emergency operators, indicating that a vehicle has been involved in an accident in which the airbags have been deployed or fuel pump shut off triggered and opens the line for hands-free communication.
“Ford’s Emergency Assistance system has already proved itself as a life-saver in other parts of the world and we expect our customers here to appreciate this level of reassuring in-car connectivity,” Singh said.
The introduction of Emergency Assistance underscores Ford’s continuing resolve to democratize technology and the debut of this advanced technology feature via SYNC® in the all-new EcoSport is a significant step in that direction.
SYNC is Ford’s voice-activated hands-free-in-car communications and entertainment system for mobile phones and digital media players that allows the driver to make and receive calls and play music from digital devices.
“Since 911 Assist (SYNC’s North American version of Emergency Assistance) was launched in 2008, we have heard many remarkable stories about how the technology made a difference for people in their time of need,” said Ed Pleet, Connected Services Director, Ford Motor Company, Asia Pacific and Africa, and Europe.
“We are constantly working on new innovations to provide Indian customers with the latest smart features and Emergency Assistance certainly raises the bar on in-car technology and connectivity in India,” he said.
How it works
Emergency Assistance delivers a critical voice message directly to emergency operators, indicating that a vehicle has been involved in an accident in which the vehicle’s airbags have been deployed or fuel pump shut off has been triggered and opens the line for hands-free communication.
The Ford SYNC Emergency Assistance system uses the driver’s own mobile phone via Bluetooth® and runs in the background once the phone is properly paired with SYNC and is within mobile phone range.
After the one-time setup, the phone connects with SYNC every time the driver enters the vehicle with his or her phone and the phone is turned on and Bluetooth is activated.
Should an accident occur in which an airbag deploys or the emergency fuel pump shutoff is activated, the feature uses SYNC hands-free phone capabilities to connect the driver directly with 108 – India’s emergency service, through the paired phone.
Before initiating the emergency call, the vehicle’s SYNC system will provide a 10- second window to allow the driver or passenger to decide whether to cancel the call. If not manually cancelled within the 10-second window, SYNC will place the emergency call.
If an accident occurs while a connected phone is being used for a normal call, the Emergency Assistance system can end that call and dial the emergency services. Also, incoming phone calls will not interrupt communication between vehicle occupants and the emergency operator.
Once the call is established, occupants can leave the vehicle and stay connected with the emergency operator by taking the phone with them as they move away.
Should an occupant not be able to communicate with the operator, an introductory message tells the emergency operator that an accident has occurred and the system provides GPS location information.
“We’re very pleased to see a company like Ford take the initiative to launch such a critical service, which will provide Ford customers with an extra level of comfort knowing that should they be involved in an accident, that “108 Emergency Services” will automatically be contacted, “said Subodh Satyawadi, Chief Executive Officer, GVK Emergency Management and Research Institute, a pioneer in Emergency Management Services in India.
The extent to which users have to maintain SYNC Emergency Assistance is limited to the one-time setup. There are no additional costs or subscriptions associated with the service.
A prompt occurs the first time a phone is paired with the system that asks if the owner wants to set SYNC Emergency Assistance for all paired phones. Once turned on, it remains that way unless the customer decides to turn the feature off.
