General Motors India has a grim face about its plan of not upgrading Tavera's engine to comply with BS-IV emission norms. If the report is to be believed then Sonalika, a local car manufacturer, will provide the new BSIV-conforming 2.0-liter engine for Tavera.
Although Chevrolet Tavera which is produced by Japanese automaker Isuzu Motors got upgraded recently, General Motors didn't update the engine to BSIV standards. Subsequently the original 2.5-liter engine version was unable to gain any market share in cities where BSIV is a must. The recent report if true, will help Tavera grab a significant share in the MPV market in India dominated by Innova, Xylo, etc.
The existing engine is not slated to be upgraded immediately but Tavera with its BSIV-friendly engine is estimated to be launched by the end of this year. This engine with max power of 100bmp is already being used by Sonalika's Rhino. Chevrolet Tavera with the same engine will cost approximately between seven to eight lakhs.
