Chief Executive of SsangYong Motor Company has announced that the company will commence assembly operations in India for their sports utility vehicles so as to take advantage of high import duties levied on completely built up units.
Rexton SUV will be the first of their line to be assembled in India. This SUV will have a 2.7 liter diesel engine and operations are set to commence from the second half of 2012. During the coming year, SsangYong Motors will also assemble Korando C SUV which will be assembled at the Mahindra and Mahindra plant located at Chakan near Pune.
Mr. Lee Yoo-il, President of SsangYong Motor Company said that while India will be the primary market, Russia will be the next where assembly operations will be shifted by 2013 as both these Governments have imposed high taxes on CBUs. SsangYong plans to sell between 5000 to 6000 Rexton SUVs in the country per annum while on the other hand, Mahindra and Mahindra, parent company of SsangYong Motors will be exporting XUV500 to Korea.
