Suzuki Motor Corporation recalls around 46,000 units of 2006 Grand Vitara and XL-7 SUVs due to defective hydraulic power assist steering pump that may result to car crash. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the problem involves a pulley driven pump wherein the plastic tension adjuster pulley for the drive belt that operates the steering pump and A/C compressor is said to have the tendency to deteriorate over time due to heat stress.
Once the pulley breaks off and the broken pieces get lodged between the pulley and drive belt, it will make steering more difficult. The US government agency also claimed that an increased steering effort may result to crash.
Suzuki Motor dealers offer free repair and steering pump drive belt tension adjuster pulley replacement to owners of affected XL-7 and Grand Vitara. However, Suzuki's Indian arm Maruti remains unaffected by the said recall.
