It is the first ever automatic and square cased chronograph watch which was sported by none other than Steve McQueen. The watch made a fashion statement and projected the brand, Tag Heuer to even greater heights. Ever since, Tag Heuer has been anonymous among motor racing drivers.
Auctioneers were well aware of worth of this watch and priced it highly only to be astonished at the final price received which far outshone their expectations. Other items on auction also included a US passport belonging to McQueen which auctioned for $46,125 while a miniature drop-ship used in Aliens sold for $225,000. Wire rimmed glasses belonging to Groucho Marx seen in “A Night at the Opera” also auctioned for $86,100 while the hat used by Vivien Leigh in “Gone with the Wind” auctioned for $67,650.
