Tata Motors bought Jaguar and Land Rover brands from Ford Motors for $ 2.3 billion in 2008. According to this deal, Ford Motor will remain the engine manufacturers for both Jaguar and Land Rover cars till 2015. But in a new development, Mr. Carl-Peter Forster, the 56 year old Tata Motors Chief Executive has announced that Tata will be transferring the job of manufacturing engines for JLR to its own engineers in India and UK.
When reporters asked Ford about their reaction on this new announcement from Tata Motors, there was no one to comment as of now. There are speculations that Tata Motors wants to bring the iconic Defender back. Tata is planning to launch Defender in India along with manufacturing its components.
Mr. Forster stated, "We are determined to come up with a modern-day Defender. Our team here in India has a lot of expertise with off-road and 4x4 vehicles for developing markets. This is not to say the next generation Defender will be engineered in India, but we are one company and we should leverage our capabilities. The mainstay manufacturings of Jaguar Land Rover we want to stay in the UK We don't want to deindustrialize the UK."
Tata has a long term plan to integrate its UK and India operations. This new announcement seems like a step towards that dream.
