Tata Motors to launch 2 premium SUVs in 2017 with JLR support

Tata Motors is set to begin development of two new SUVs with support from Jaguar and Land Rover (JLR). These products could fall in premium SUV segment, in price range of Rs. 16-25 lakhs.

Tata MotorsCodename Q501 will be a five seater SUV which will possibly rival Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano. Second is Codename Q502, a seven seater SUV, which will likely target Toyota Fortuner and Mahindra SsangYong Rexton range of SUVs.

JLR will step into powertrain and handling department of both cars, to ensure they put up good fight against their respective rivals.

An executive at a leading auto parts making company said to livemint that the joint product development plan is part of a long product pipeline till 2020, and that its approval has been received from Tata board.

Both companies, Tata and its subsidiary, will continue to explore and expand joint development plans to include key areas like engine, performance, suspension, structure, strength and technology in future cars.

Tata Motors promised to launch two new cars every year. This year we saw Zest compact sedan, and Bolt hatchback will launch by end of 2014. In 2016, Tata would launch Kite A segment hatchback and Nexon sub-4 metre compact SUV. Aforementioned new SUVs wold be launched in 2017, by which time Tata may discontinue Safari SUV and Aria 7 seater MPV.
