Rising interest rates and high prices of fuel have made small cars most uneconomical to run. It is for this reason that Tata Motors has seen a drastic dip in demand for Tata Nano. During the month of April 2012, the company sold way below 10000 units despite the fact that the car had shown tremendous demand in the past 6 months. During April, Tata Motors sold 8,028 units of the Nano which results in a 20% decrease in sales. In a year on year comparison, 10,012 Tata Nano units were sold in April 2011. In March 2012, the company sold 10,475 Tata Nano small cars, the highest ever in a month.

While top management is confident of their sales figures reaching the 10000 per month mark it is to be seen whether this will be feasible or not. In the meanwhile, Tata Motors is also testing the diesel variant of Tata Nano.

Once this variant is launched in the Indian auto market, it is expected to attract buyers considering the company predictions that it will offer about 40 km per liter thus making it the most fuel efficient vehicles in the world. Buyers will have to wait for the diesel variant launch. The CNG Bi-Fuel variant was recently seen at the 2012 Indian Auto Show and would be in demand especially in larger cities where infrastructure is well developed.
