Thailand targets to produce 30 lakh vehicles annually by 2017
Thailand has set an increased target of 3 million (30 lakh) automobiles per year by 2017, and considering their present growth rate, they are well on their way to achieve this target way before schedule. The eco-car project in Thailand has received overwhelming response from customers. which has steered the country ahead in its endeavour.
Industry Minister Prasert Boonchaisuk has confirmed that manufacture of 2.55 million units by end of this year is set for further expansion which will see added investment in the country. It will also give rise to Chinese manufacturer’s application to Board of Investment for permission to produce MG sedans in an eastern industrial estate.
The Thai auto industry came into existence in 1961 with only one assembly plant and a total annual output of 525 units. The country now ranks 9th in the world where auto production is concerned and 13th in auto exports. The auto industry in the country has increased by leaps and bounds to emerge as a world class production base with 16 car and truck manufacturers and 7 motorcycle assemblers present besides mostly all leading automakers and parts manufacturers from across the globe setting up base in Thailand.
Auto makers with production bases in Thailand include Ford, General Motors, BMW, DaimlerChrysler, Mitsubishi, Mazda, Toyota, Isuzu, Honda and Nissan. Besides this, Thailand also ranks No. 1 globally where production of 1 Ton pick-ups is concerned.
