Toyota Fortuner dominates the Rs 15-25 lakh SUV segment

Toyota Fortuner, one of the most expensive models in Toyota lineup is an undisputed market leader. Priced from INR 22.2 to 24.3 lakhs, it has won hands down where attracting attention of the Indian buyer is concerned, and it has been noted that seven out of every 10 SUVs sold in the country, in the INR 15-25 lakh bracket, is a Fortuner.

Notwithstanding higher taxes, general slowdown in the auto sector and dip in consumer sentiments, Toyota has sold over 57,500 units of Fortuner ever since the SUV was launched in August 2009. Fortuner sales surged ahead with a total of 11,416 units sold during the period April to November 2013.

This increase of 12% YoY has left competitors as Ford Endeavour, Mahindra Rexton, Chevy Captiva, Hyundai Santa-Fe, Mitsubishi Pajero, Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Renault Koleos and Skoda Yeti way behind, with each of these companies noting reduced sales during the same 8 month period.

It was only Honda CR-V and Mahindra Rexton that reported increased sales during the fiscal, but even these sales were no match for Fortuner’s demand. Experts indicate a strong run for Fortuner in India in the future. The SUV is much in demand among both urban and rural buyers and is valued for its plush interiors, macho design exclusive drivability and safety features. (source)
