Now, it has been revealed that the first motorcycle to be launched under the partnership, will be a 300 cc street bike. It will be a single cylinder, four stroke engine. Not much has been known about this bike as of now. They could enter production by late 2015 or early 2016, depending on various parameters. Once launched, it will be sold under the TVS nameplate.
Chennai based TVS Motors have been falling behind rivals Hero, Honda and Bajaj over the years. Their only 150+cc motorcycle on offer, Apache was launched back in 2007. The need of the hour is to launch new products, which will be able to compete with the likes of upcoming bikes – Duke 390, KTM RC200, KTM RC390, Hero HX250R, Honda CBR300R, Honda CBR 250R, Yamaha R25, Ninja 300, Ninja 250, etc. This deal with BMW is expected to give them the much needed technological edge, which will prove beneficial for them to launch competitive products in the market.
TVS did give us a glimpse of their future, when they revealed the Draken Concept at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. Many motorcycle enthusiasts were impressed with the design. Draken was a 250 cc concept with 4 valve DOHC engine. Output from the engine was impressive at 38.50 bhp and 23 Nm torque, with a claimed mileage of 33.3 kmpl. TVS never stated that this bike was developed in association with BMW Motorrad, but the chances are high. Whatever the case be, the future looks bright for motorcycle riders in India.
