A case of old wine in new bottles – Volkswagen Genuine Exchange Parts wherein the company remanufactures engines, gearboxes and other components has entered its 65th year. Till date 89 million parts have been sold under this exchange part scheme which only shows its success while at the same time reducing expenses for Volkswagen customers by over 40%. There is no compromise on efficiency of these parts when remanufactured. In fact, in all cases they become as good as new or in a number of cases even enhanced in performance. Till date, under this process, 7.9 million engines, 2.9 million gearboxes and 78 million other components have been remanufactured and sold.

Exchange Parts Programme started around 1947 when the company remanufactured Beetle engines. The company remanufacturing unit is based in Baunatal where in 450 employees work in the remanufacturing process offering customers these parts at a 40% saving as compared to purchase of new parts while at the same time offering them the same quality, performance and warranty.

On an annual basis, the company remanufactures 48000 engines of 490 variants, 60000 cylinder heads of 220 variants and 49000 gearboxes of 550 variants while even common rail engines and DSG dual clutch transmissions can be remanufactured. By resorting to this sort of remanufacturing process the company is helping to protect the environment in a very big way. If these parts were all scrapped one can only imaging the impact on the environment. In fact, it was estimated that the amount of steel saved each year was equal to 7000 metric tonnes which was enough to set up another Eiffel Tower in Paris.
