Yesterday, Volkswagen unveiled their all new mini SUV called Taigun at the 2012 Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil. At just 3.85 meters long, Taigun is expected to arrive in auto markets around the globe by 2014. Once launched in India, Volkswagen Taigun will compete directly with the Ford EcoSport, which arrives in India next year. EcoSport too is a sub 4 meter SUV and so is Mahindra Quanto which was launched last month in India and received record bookings of 5,000 in just 21 days.
Just like EcoSport, which is powered by Ford’s next gen 3 cylinder 1.0 liter EcoBoost engine, Volkswagen too will be powering the Taigun with their next gen 3 cylinder 1.0L engine which will also power their new cars like UP! GT. In the Taigun, the new Volkswagen engine will deliver 110 PS power and a peak torque of 175 Nm @ just 1500 rpm. According to Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development, comments: “The torque-strong three-cylinder is an ideal engine for such a compact SUV; it is a companion for driving through the urban environment that is as efficient as it is dynamic.”
Volkswagen Taigun mini SUV can attain a top speed of 186 kmph and can accelerate from 0-100 kmph in just 9.2 seconds. Volkswagen says Taigun will deliver a mileage of 22.22 kmpl approximately, thanks to its lightweight of just 985 kgs. VW Taigun tire size is at 205/50 R17 with 17 inch alloys.

Compact SUV comes with new 1.0-litre TSI
Wolfsburg/São Paulo, 22 October 2012 – At the 2012 São Paulo International Motor Show in Brazil, Volkswagen is presenting the concept of a newly developed SUV in compact format in a world premiere: the Taigun.
Technically, the Taigun resembles the very contemporary New Small Family by Volkswagen, which it would round out in an upward direction if it were to be produced. The concept’s exterior look follows the very concise and clear Volkswagen design DNA. This gives the Sport Utility Vehicle a sophisticated and powerful appearance. The Taigun is 3,859 mm long, 1,728 mm wide and 1,570 mm tall. Between the front and rear bumpers, the vehicle sports a wheelbase of 2,470 mm, which is large in relation to its exterior length. The results: short overhangs and appealing proportions.
The four-seat concept car is powered by a new 1.0-litre TSI engine with 81 kW / 110 PS. The Taigun engine extends the range of the three-cylinder petrol engines by adding direct fuel injection plus turbocharging technology, which opens a new chapter in downsizing strategy at Volkswagen. The engine delivers a high torque of 175 Nm at a low 1,500/min. Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Member of the Board of Management of the Volkswagen Brand for Technical Development, comments: “The torque-strong three-cylinder is an ideal engine for such a compact SUV; it is a companion for driving through the urban environment that is as efficient as it is dynamic.” The lightweight concept car, weighing 985 kg, has a top speed of 186 km/h and accelerates to 100 km/h in 9.2 seconds; its combined fuel consumption is about four and one-half litres of fuel per 100 km.
The Taigun, which is equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels and size 205/50 R17 tyres, is also adept at handling offroad terrain thanks to its high engine torque and high ground clearance. Also providing a plus in active safety is the ESC electronic stabilisation programme.
The styling of the concept car, which is painted in “Seaside Blue”, lives up to its sophisticated technological concept. The Taigun has an exterior look that is independent, confident and very logical and clean. In a side view, the flared wings catch the eye; their powerful form is smoothly integrated into the side section and extends into the doors.
The front and rear sections of the concept car are visually joined by a precisely sculpted character line beneath the side windows; at the rear, this line transitions into the C-pillars.
In the lower body area, the rugged side trim panels are appealing; they cover the side sills, wheel arches and lower sections of the bumpers. The vehicle’s short overhangs are advantageous both visually and for space utilisation; in front the overhang is just 708 mm, and at the rear 681 mm. Last but not least, practical roof rails with integrated LED spotlights upgrade the vehicle’s look in side profile.
Like the Volkswagen Tiguan and Touareg SUVs, the Taigun also exhibits lines that are dominated by horizontal design elements in front. A metal underbody protection panel was designed into the bumper. This was also done at the rear bumper. Overall, horizontal lines also define the styling at the rear section. The tailgate of the concept is designed in two-part construction. The upper section that extends down to the lower edge of the rear lights swings upward, while the lower section (1/3) extending to the underbody protection swings downwards towards the road.
As on the exterior, the designers developed a look for the interior that reflects, in its clarity, the spirit of the times in our urban world. Those with an affinity for the latest smart phones or tablet computers will also like the interior design, the feel of its surfaces and the layout of controls in the Taigun. The SUV is also a prime example of optimal space utilisation. The tailgate encloses a 280 litre bootspace; when the rear bench seat is folded down, cargo capacity increases to 987 litres.
The operation of all interior functional elements is intuitive. Furthermore, the clean design, many storage surfaces and exceptionally good space conditions generate a very positive spacious feeling. Meanwhile, the youthful colour and material combinations highlight the offroad character of the Taigun. Similarly, the concept development team designed individual solutions for user controls in the SUV as well. They include dials in the air nozzles on the dashboard – which for the first time can be used to control the temperature and blower speed and read their settings.

September 20, 2012, Mumbai: Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. (M&M), a part of the US $ 15.4 billion Mahindra Group, today unveiled the eagerly awaited all new compact and versatile SUV QUANTO in Mumbai. Designed and developed in-house by Mahindra on the robust, proven and highly successful Ingenio platform, the Quanto is a direct outcome of customer insights pointing to the need for a compact and affordable SUV.
The Quanto will be available nationally at Mahindra dealerships, with four distinct and attractive variants – C2, C4, C6 & C8. The Quanto price range starts from Rs. 5.82 lac (ex-showroom Thane) for the base C2 model, to Rs. 7.36 lac (ex showroom Thane) for the fully loaded top end C8 model. All the Quanto variants are powered by a 1.5 litre mCR100 diesel engine giving a category best output of 100bhp & a massive 240nm of torque. The mCR100 engine has India’s first twin stage turbo technology for maximum power and excellent torque delivery.

Expanding its relentless push into the heart of Asia’s car market, Ford introduces the all-new Ford EcoSport at Auto Expo 2012 this week. The new compact SUV will further augment Ford’s offering in India, as well as in many other markets across the globe.
Modern and innovative, the all-new Ford EcoSport was designed to combine best-in-class design, technology, quality and safety aimed at attracting a new generation of consumers in different global markets.
Created as the latest One Ford global product, the EcoSport will be a key model in expanding Ford’s presence in major worldwide growth markets, including India, Brazil and the ASEAN markets. It has been developed in South America at one of Ford’s eight global product development centers in conjunction with teams from Asia, Europe and North America to meet the needs of markets across the globe.

Yet, its innovative design reduces the weight and ensures good fuel efficiency.
Contemporary new EcoSport shape
The all-new EcoSport’s contemporary shape conveys confidence while combining refinement and an adventurous spirit in an intelligent and modern package. It sports key SUV cues such as the confident stance, command driving position and signature spare wheel mounted on a swinggate at the rear of the vehicle.
The EcoSport’s hardy character and strong stance give it the appearance of a larger vehicle, while retaining the agility and practicality of a compact car. It features high ground clearance and integrated lower body cladding for robustness.
The back of the vehicle is marked by a large rear window which wraps around to the sides and oblique shaped taillights. This characteristic defines the striking personality of the EcoSport family: a sporty and casual car, for consumers who want to stand out and who want more from life, but in an intelligent and sustainable way.
New global products for growth markets
Previewing the vehicle design first at the 11th Annual Auto Expo in New Delhi gives Ford the opportunity to introduce EcoSport to consumers in one of the world’s biggest automotive growth markets ahead of its future global rollouts.
The new EcoSport was developed on Ford’s new global B-segment platform, which will be the basis for an array of new small-car products from Ford in the coming years. By mid-decade, the new Ford B-platform family of vehicles will represent more than 2 million units of annual production as compact cars continue to drive global growth.
The EcoSport has been a market phenomenon since it was launched in South America in 2003 as the region’s first affordable SUV, selling 700,000 vehicles in nine years. It created a new segment and popularized features that many consumers had wanted.
The EcoSport will be produced at ultra-modern, flexible assembly plants in Brazil, India, and other markets to be announced at a later time. The EcoSport as a global vehicle is an example of the technical ability of Ford’s global engineering and high level of integration of the design and engineering centres around the world.
The project was led by Ford’s Development Center in Camaçari, Brazil, one of the most specialized in the development of compact cars. The team leveraged Ford engineering strength and SUV expertise from around the world to create the all-new EcoSport.
“The new EcoSport is a significant milestone for our global product development process,” said Derrick Kuzak, group vice president, Global Product Development. “It proves that great smallcar models for growth markets can be created in growth markets, using One Ford to leverage our global design and engineering expertise.”
EcoSport’s development was shaped by market research in all of the regions where it will be sold. This helped create a unique vehicle, focused on the needs and desires of consumers. It will eventually be sold in nearly 100 markets worldwide.
Fuelling expansion in Asia and beyond
The all-new EcoSport is a significant linchpin in Ford’s aggressive global plan to achieve its goal of increasing worldwide sales by nearly 50 percent by mid-decade to 8 million vehicles a year. Of that figure, 60 to 70 percent is expected to come from the Asia Pacific and Africa region.
“We’ve promised to bring more than 50 new vehicles and powertrains to Asia Pacific and Africa by mid-decade and the all-new EcoSport continues to deliver on that pledge,” said Joe Hinrichs, president, Ford Asia Pacific and Africa. “Endowed with traits that customers in markets like India will want and value, this exciting compact SUV will define a new segment in the small car market.”
The EcoSport is the second of eight products slated to be launched in India by mid-decade and will bring about further momentum in a business transformation that was kick started by the Ford Figo and strengthened by the new Ford Fiesta sedan. Ford India’s shift from niche automaker to volume player is supported by several new investments in the country.
Ford recently broke ground in Sanand, Gujarat as part of an investment of approximately USD 1 billion to build new vehicle manufacturing and engine plants. Ford also announced earlier an investment of USD 72 million by this year (2012) to expand its already operating powertrain facility in Chennai. Ford’s total investment in India to date is approximately USD 2 billion.
The new EcoSport will be produced in the integrated Chennai manufacturing facility which has been transformed with an annual production capacity of 200,000 units and is now positioned as a Ford regional centre of excellence for compact-car engineering and production. Ford EcoSport models will be also produced at the plant for export to international markets.
