Volkswagen Up!, the ultra compact car, was released in Japanese markets earlier this month and already orders for the new Up! are well over the 3000 unit mark. These sales are remarkable considering the complaint that Japan’s markets are closed to imports. If things go according to this schedule it may soon be that sales of VW Up! may far surpass sales of the Golf subcompact making the Up! the most successful vehicle to be launched by the German manufacturers.

VW Up! two door version costs ¥1,490,000 ($18,600) inclusive of taxes. This makes the new Up! compete with Japanese only Kei car segment. Considering this spectacular start to sales of VW Up!, the company has stated that they are most likely to double their annual sales in Japanese markets. The target to boost sales to 110,000 units by 2018 was declared as the new Up! was launched.

Volkswagen, the German auto manufacturers plan to attack Japanese markets with the offer of new products such as the Up! and CC Sedan. The company will be entering new segments and bring in diesel engined vehicles into Japanese markets and also hopes to increase their dealer networks from a current 246 to 337 by 2018.
