Safety is of prime importance when one s driving or riding a vehicle. In order to make sure vehicles can be trustworthy; society of Indian automobile manufacturers (SIAM) has laid down certain guidelines which need to be followed in case evidence has been found of defects in certain vehicles that have been sold. Systematic recall of these vehicles is based upon the number of vehicles that have been plagued by such problems. Failure to do so could invite stern action by the government.

The policy states that if a firm feels that there is a problem, i.e. manufacturing defect with a particular vehicle, two-wheeler or four-wheeler it needs to recall said amount of vehicles and rectify problems free of cost.
SIAM has left it up to the auto manufacturers to determine the minimum number of vehicles affected to initiate a recall. In case manufacturers fail to initiate a recall even after evidence has been found, the government can take action against such violations.

SIAM president, S Sandilya said, that norms and regulations have been put in place to control a mandatory recall if initiated by the government. As to penalties on erring companies he said that it could be considered in case of non compliance. However, he made it known that companies will be the sole losers in case such an incident takes place. According to him the major punishment was loss of brand image and slack in sales.
