Swedish luxury car makers, Volvo are mulling over the possibility of setting up a manufacturing unit in emerging economies, of which India is on the prime list. The company is set to double global sales from a present 440,000 units to 800,000 units by 2020 and is banking on emerging economies to help them achieve this goal.
Volvo will also be increasing prices of all their models by 5% from January 2013 due to rupee devaluation, inflation and rising costs of imports. Other leading car manufacturers in the country are set to hike prices by 6 to 8 percent from January 2013.
Volvo, now operating on completely built up units is eyeing a 15% share in the luxury car market in India by 2020. Looking at expected sales to touch 1,200 units in 2013, the company expects more demand from Gujarat. Volvo lineup also includes Volvo SC90, XC60, S80 and S60 all in the luxury category. The new dealership headed by Arvind Thakkar will be targeting realtors, diamond merchants and industrialists in Ahmedabad where there is more demand for SUVs over luxury sedans.
