It seemed like a normal day for student pilot William Davis at Northwest Regional Airport in Roanoke, Texas, to take his solo round trip in a 2005 Cessna Sky Hawk, single engined plane. The flight was enjoyable and exhilarating but it was landing that has made the pilot think over learning to fly an aircraft. On Saturday morning, while landing his plane, a Volvo SUV appeared on the road bordering the runway, taking both pilot and SUV driver by surprise.
Davis’ wife, who was watching her husband’s landing, has caught the landing on film as it crashed into the roof of the Volvo SUV, which was being driven by Frank and Heather Laudo. Drivers along that road are expected to stop on seeing the runway active but this obviously escaped the attention of the Laudo couple who escaped unhurt.
Glen Hyde, Airport Manager, said, “I will be talking with the FAA tomorrow in an effort to explore options to make the private road not owned by the airport safer.” He also told WFAA that the drivers are supposed to stop their vehicles, watch, and go, when the runway is active.
