Why is MNS chief Raj Thackeray urging commuters to say no to payment of toll tax: Partymen vandalize toll booths in Mumbai
Maharashtra Navnirman Sena Chief Mr. Raj Thackeray has impelled people traveling on express highways to refuse to pay toll tax at toll collection centres. Speaking…
MNS workers across the city to find out the number of vehicles passing through and amount of money collected. This is being done to bring to the fore the rampant corruption involved in such collections. Toll contractors do not disclose actual number of vehicles passing through and exact figures being collected. This money is also not going towards proper maintenance of roads or amenities for which the money is actually being collected.
The money thus collected totals to crores of rupees. Speaking of the city of Mumbai alone, where there are five entry points annual revenue of over Rs.2 billion is collected by toll tax. Thackeray has posted 10,000 party workers at over 40 toll nakas across the state on traffic, toll collected and total cost of the project.
Speaking to the media, Raj said, “I am not against toll collection. But a citizen who pays the toll should know where that money is going and for what purpose it is used. MNS shall stop forceful collection of toll. Public is being exploited by toll charges. Government policies with regard to toll collection are not being implemented. We are going to write to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan (about this).”
