World’s most expensive car crash as Classic Ferrari priced at £20 million crashes

It could be regarded as the most expensive accident in history. A £ 20 million Classic Ferrari 250 GTO was involved in a head on collision with another vehicle. US businessman Christopher Cox and his wife Ann were in their luxurious Ferrari when it crashed at Saint Etienne des Guirets in Central France.

Anne suffered a broken leg and Christopher suffered a broken heart as his £20 million Ferrari 250 GTO suffered severe damages. The couple was participating in the 50th anniversary celebrations of Ferrari 2450 GTO and was part of a convoy of vehicles totally priced at £ 500 million when the accident occurred. This five day tour saw auto enthusiasts drive along Gueux racing circuit in Reims before visiting the Abbey of Hautvillers of Dom Pérignon champagne fame.

Classic Ferrari 250 GTO is only one of 39 such examples produced, all costing £20 million and above. This particular model was built in April 1962 and bears chassis No.3445GT. The vehicle received a coat of blue paint with a bright yellow stripe in 1963. It was also rebodied in 1976 and underwent full restoration before it was possessed by Cox in 2005. It possesses a 3 liter V12 engine capable of 300 bhp and top speed of 174 mph.
