Yamaha BW’S 125 scooter goes on sale at approx Rs 2.38 lakh

The Yamaha BW’S 125, an unconventional automatic scooter, has been updated for the 2020 model year in Japan

The premium urban runabout is priced at 3,35,000 yen (around INR 2.38 lakh). Described by Yamaha as ‘open crossover’ style, the BW’S 125 receives design inspiration from adventure tourers. The bare handlebar with knuckle guards, dual-purpose tyres, rear luggage rack, steering-mounted LED indicators (like fog lights in appearance) and sharp front mudguard render the scooter an outdoorsy appeal.

The bulky front apron with twin element headlamp (one projector and one halogen) adds to the 2020 Yamaha BW’S 125’s quirky appeal. Other noteworthy features include a fully digital circular LED instrument display, twin-taillight, alloy brake levers, 3-in-1 main key switch, apron-mounted fuel filler and a 6.5-liter fuel tank.

The 2020 Yamaha BW’S 125 features a 29 liter underseat storage compartment which is claimed to accommodate a full-size helmet or a laptop. There is also an open 4-liter niche on the left side of the apron.

The premium automatic scooter is based on an under-bone chassis and is equipped with 33 mm telescopic front fork and adjustable (preload) twin rear shock absorbers. A 245 mm front and 200 mm rear disc take care of braking duties. The 10-inch five-spoke alloy wheels come shod with chunky 120/90 section front and rear tyres which should make for sporty riding.

The premium hardware is matched with a 124 cc air-cooled, fuel-injected, 4-valve engine which is paired to a CVT. Power and torque figures stand at 9.9 hp and 9.9 Nm of torque which is adequate for a zippy ride in urban environment. Given the premium positioning and adventure tourer appeal of the BW’S 125, a slightly larger and more powerful engine would have been an attractive proposition. That said, the 125 cc mill addresses popular segment with a promise of impressive fuel economy.

The sporty BW’S 125 can be further spruced up with official accessories like a chrome tip for the exhaust, metal inserts on the floor board, a sizable windshield, split grab rails, and so on.

The Yamaha BW’S 125 automatic scooter is not likely to be launched in India since it would be too expensive for our market. Yamaha India has the 125 cc covered with the recently updated Fascino and Ray ZR 125 models. However, a BW’S-style dual-purpose scooter based on the Indianized 125 cc platform would be an interesting proposition to take on the popular Aprila SR125.

Yamaha India is currently mid-way in upgrading its product portfolio to BS6 emission standards. Once the lockdown is lifted, we expect the brand’s quarter liter offerings FZ 25 and FZS 25 to receive the BS6 update.
