Launched back in 2009, Yamaha FZ-16 made many fans in very short time. In March 2009, Yamaha launched FZ-S with front visor, striking colour theme and marginally higher price tag. It worked. Soon the Japanese motorcycle maker launched Fazer 150 which is nothing but FZ-16 with a giant fairing on front end asking for bigger bill. It worked again. Then Yamaha periodically gave the trio livery updates and no mechanical changes, keeping bikes trendy and fans happy.
At 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, Yamaha showcased next generation FZ-S concept with significant design changes; no word about engine or power spec. Spy shots did not help to determine performance upgrades either. Word around suggested slightly bigger engine with more power would be featured to step up its game. When Yamaha recently sent out media invites for “unveiling of a new chapter” today, it was almost clear that new FZ facelift would be coming out. And it did.
Yamaha launched FZ and FZ-S version 2.0 today and talked about market research and styling updates given to the bikes, one piece of information came as a surprise and stuck to our minds. New 2014 FZ & FZ-S share smaller engine with lesser power! Its not a jump from 153cc to 125cc, still 149cc itches. Not to mention recorded max. power and peak torque dip from 14 PS and 13.6 Nm to 13.1 PS and 12.8 Nm. It was unclear how it could be an upgrade, at this point.
Yamaha Motor India cleared it out by announcing newly implemented ‘BlueCore’ technology to improve combustion efficiency and reduce power loss thereby saving performance of FZ version 2 bikes. Yamaha’s fuel injection system and reduced chassis weight (by 3 kg) also contributes to keeping up appearances on a rev match.
Surprisingly, Yamaha managed to make new FZ and FZ-S v2.0 bikes more appealing by claiming improved 0-100 sprint time and hike in mileage by 14% along with lowered CO2 emission. FZ is now the lightest in segment weighing just 132 kg (kerb weight). In short, Yamaha has made FZ to look more beefy, invite more eyes, be more aerodynamic, and easier on the pocket (after purchase).
Significant changes from older FZ apart from power train includes new body graphics, redesigned headlight unit, new visor, clear turn indicators, new multifunction digital instrument panel with ECO indicator, air scoops below tank, split seats, new pillion grab rails, redesigned exhaust end cap, new tire hugger, fresh tail light assembly, redesigned tire treads and tweaked front and rear suspension settings.
Color options of 2014 Yamaha FZ version 2.0 include Panther Black & Scorching Red; priced at Rs. 76,250 ex-showroom Delhi. That of new FZ-S ver. 2.0 include Astral Blue, Moonwalk White, Cyber Green & Molten Orange; priced at Rs. 78,250 ex-showroom Delhi.
