Daily commuters and tourists alike will be thrilled at the prospect of covering the Delhi – Agra distance in a matter of 2.5 hours, thanks to the newly inaugurated Yamuna Expressway. This six lane access controlled expressway from Greater Noida to Agra was conceived in 2002 and was finally inaugurated via a video link at the hands of Akhilesh Yadav, Chief Minister of Lucknow yesterday. Open to two wheelers as well, commuters will be able to enjoy a free ride without the burden of toll tax till August 15th, in view of Janamasthami (10th Aug) and Independence Day (15th Aug) celebrations.

Post August 15th, commuters will have to pay toll at booths situated at 38km, 95km and 150 km marks. The 165 km stretch from India Gate to Taj Mahal will take just 2 ½ hours and is considered to be India’s longest six laned controlled access expressway stretch. Toll rates are fixed at Rs 2.10 per km for cars while a round trip on a single day will cost around Rs 510.

Cost of the total project was Rs 12,839 crores and will provide a fast moving corridor while at the same time reducing time travel. The Yamuna Expressway will help in connecting major townships and commercial centers on eastern side of Yamuna while large scale development is expected to come up in adjoining areas, including India’s F1 track, Buddh International Circuit. It will at the same time reduce pollution and carbon footprint of vehicles traversing between New Delhi and Agra.
