12 concept cars inspired by nature at 2013 LA Auto Show
Each of these designs presented have been inspired by nature and are designed to address the most urgent issues which include congestion, sustainability, air pollution and safety.
Nine auto design studios will be participating in the Design Challenge represented by BMW, Changfeng, JAC Motors, Mazda, Qoros, SAIC Motor, Subaru and Toyota, while there are three additional studios that will not be competing in the competition but their concepts will be showcased at the 2013 LA Auto Show. These include Hyundai Design and Research Center, Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center California and Nissan Design America.
Each of these nature inspired concepts will be judged by experts in this field and will include Tom Matano, Executive Director, School of Industrial Design at San Francisco’s Academy of Art University, Stewart Reed, Head of Transportation Design at Pasadena’s Art Center College of Design and John Manoogian, Adjunct Professor Auto Design Studio at College for Creative Studies. Qoros Auto China’s Silk Road System will be showcased, inspired by the silk worm, where it will enable vehicles to operate smoothly and effortlessly in traffic situations, thus negating the incidents of accidents altogether.
BMW Group DesignworksUSA will submit two entries – LA Subways and Sustainable Efficient Exploratory Devise (SEED). Here the former is inspired by swarms and the power network of cells using waterways for a more efficient transportation system, while the latter is inspired by the maple seed with a rotating tail and capturing both wind and solar energy for its optimum functioning.
Toyota Design Networks have created e-grus inspired by the crane bird using a small footprint and upright profile to maneuver through tight traffic situations, while Subaru Design Team has based their entry on the jumping motions of a Kangaroo. Each of the esteemed judges will assess the various entries to select a winner which will be revealed on Thursday, November 21, 2013, while all concepts will be displayed at the new design Gallery at the LA Auto Show.
