The iconic 1954 Mercedes-Benz W196R Formula 1 Racing Single-Seater bears the Chassis number 196 010 00006/54. This German and Swiss Grand Prix winner is the only surviving W196 (first open-wheel version )that has won 2 World Championship-qualifying Grand Prix races with Juan Manuel Fangio (El Maestro) at its wheel. The now sold race car was listed in auction 20929 in lot number 320.
Not seen much the past 30 years and more, it’s the Silver Arrow? in the world that has been in in private possession. This piece of history has been one of few race cars not locked away in a museum. Still in original condition, the race car is unrestored, and doesn’t require much to get it going. The surviving W196 is 1 of 14 that was manufactured, of course not all survived.
