2020 Skoda Octavia sedan debuts – Variants, engine, features, all details

2020 Skoda Octavia

After a long wait, Skoda finally unveiled the 11th generation Octavia at an event in Prague, Czech Republic. The current gen Octavia has been on sale since 2013 and the car had aged and needed a dose of some fresh blood, which Skoda engineers have injected in the right amount in the 2020 Octavia.

The next-gen Octavia is based upon an updated version of Volkswagen’s MQB platform. The car has grown in size, and on the styling front it is in sync with Skoda group’s latest design language. It takes considerable design cues from its elder sibling, the Superb. When compared with previous generations, this update looks way more aggressive and sportier. Key noticeable update includes new bumpers, updated grille design and redesigned headlamps (which are no longer split-type).

The Octavia happens to be Skoda’s best selling nameplate in Europe. The long list of variants, like, Combi (station-wagon), sedan (aka notchback), RS (performance oriented) and Scout (off-roading focused) ensure that there is an Octavia for all kinds of customers.

Under the hood, Octavia will be getting multiple engine options in international markets. These include a 2 litre TSI, 1.4 L TSI, 1.5 L TSI, 1 L TSI and a 2 L TDI EVO engine. The 1.0 & 1.5 litre TSI engines also get a 48V mild-hybrid option while the 1.4 litre TSI motor gets a PHEV option.

In India, Skoda will mostly bring in the 1.5 litre turbo-petrol TSI motor. Gearbox options will mostly include a 7-speed dual-clutch AT and a 6-speed manual, both of which are available on the current-gen model as well. There is no clarity if the diesel engine option will be brought to India, considering the stricter BS 6 emission norms which will come into force next year.

An Indian launch of the sedan is expected to take place in 2020 (via the CKD route), most probably in the second half of the year. Talking about the competition, once launched, it will be competing with the likes of the updated Hyundai Elantra, Toyota Corolla Altis and Honda Civic. Pricing of the current generation Octavia in India is between Rs 16 – 26 lakhs (ex-showroom), and we expect the next gen model to charge a little price premium over its predecessor.
