The entry-level D-segment Volkswagen Jetta is due for a mid-life refresh in India. The car was highly appreciated during its introduction in the sub-continent a few years ago, but as time passed, the not-so volume making segment started loosing focus further to the up and coming crossover class, after getting overpowered by SUVs in the same price range in initial stages.
In short, the elegant mid-size sedan segment got overshadowed by SUVs like Toyota Fortuner, Mahindra XUV 500, Scorpio and in recent years by Renault Duster and Nissan Terrano. The sedans may not recover (in terms of sales) owing to arrival of crossovers like Maruti S-Cross and Hyundai ix25. These high stance vehicles are no way a direct match to sedans between Rs. 10 and Rs. 20 lakhs, but due to spike in trend for bulky means of transport, the flat ones fell prey before they saw it coming. The updated sedan was showcased at 2014 New York Motor Show. It features revised front & rear fascia, new 10-spoke alloy wheels and refurbished interiors. Prominent changes will include new rectangular fog lamps on exterior and new 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel, piano black trims & touchscreen infotainment system inside the car.
Engine and transmission options in 2015 Volkswagen Jetta facelift are expected to be the same, including 1.4 litre TSI petrol and 2.0 litre TDI diesel engines, but with better power & torque figures.
Expect the new VW Jetta to be priced in the range of Rs. 13.5 lakhs to 19.5 lakhs. It will continue to compete with Skoda Octavia, Toyota Corolla and Hyundai Elantra.
