2016 Audi A4 which has been spied several times earlier adopts an evolutionary design language rather than introducing a new school of thought. In that sense, it looks more like a refreshed version of old A4 rather than an all-new model.
That said, B9 A4 is larger than the outgoing model with a length of 4.73 m (25 mm longer), width of 1.84 m (16 mm wider), height of 1.43 m and a wheelbase of 2.82 m (12 mm longer). Based on the MQB platform, the new gen model is lighter by up to 120 kg which should greatly enhance dynamics and efficiency. Drag co-efficient for sedan and Avant variants stand at 0.23 and 0.26 respectively.
Inside, design theme is inspired by new Audi Q7, especially the nicely camouflaged AC vents. Audi Virtual Cockpit instrument panel (optional) which debuted in the TT, 8.3-inch MMI system compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bang & Olufsen music system, 10.1-inch displays for rear seat occupants (integrated into front head restraints), 30 color LED ambient lighting, redesigned seats and enhanced rear legroom of 23 mm are the interior highlights.
Coming to the equipment, in addition to usual array of safety features, new A4 offers LED lighting, Audi pre sense city, Adaptive Cruise Control with Traffic-Jam Assist and Tour Assist, parking assist with 12 radar sensors and so on.
New A4 is powered by a range of turbocharged direct injection petrol and diesel engines. Petrol range includes a 150 PS/250 Nm 1.4-litre TFSI and a 2.0-litre TFSI which is available in two states of tune – 190 PS/320 Nm and 252 PS/370 Nm.
Diesel lineup comprises a 2.0-litre TDI which is offered in 150 PS/320 Nm and 190 PS/400 Nm tunes and a range-topping 3.0-litre V6 TDI which can be had in 218 PS/400 Nm and 272 PS/600 Nm tunes.
Save for the 3.0-litre TDI which will be offered with a standard 8-speed S-Tronic autobox, rest of the motors can be specc’ed with 6-speed manual or 7-speed S-tronic automatic transmissions. Audi has phased out the obsolete CVT.
2016 A4 is a very important model for Audi in India and should be here soon after the car’s European debut later this year. It is most likely to be locally assembled, just like its predecessor.
