Official sketch of 2016 Mercedes GLC has been released ahead of the luxury SUV’s world debut on June 17. A good portion of new GLC’s design, especially the front fascia was previewed by GLC Coupe concept which premiered earlier this year.
Almond shaped LED headlamps, signature Mercedes grille, hexagonal secondary air dam and prominent foglight enclosures render a familiar and modern identity. A high waistline and bulging seat metal design makes for a muscular appearance in profile.
While GLC Coupe concept had a swooping roof line like BMW X4, regular variant gets a smoothly arching element. Rear fascia is expected to adopt GLC Coupe’s narrow horizontal LED combination lights.
As revealed by select international motoring journalists who had an opportunity to sample the prototypes, GLC borrows its dashboard design directly from C Class on which it’s based.
Since GLC uses C Class’ platform, it will benefit from extensive use of aluminium in construction. So expect it to be much lighter and stiffer than its predecessor. Powertrain, equipment and assistance systems would also be derived from its sedan sibling.
Mercedes highlighted its commitment to Indian market by doubling up its local production capacity. It’s safe to assume that Mercedes GLC will be launched here to plug the massive gap that exists between GLA and GLE (ML Class).
