The 2016 SsangYong Rexton SUV has received comprehensive under-the-skin updates in the UK. The Mahindra-owned South Korean automaker has replaced the aging SUV’s 2.0-litre diesel engine with its Euro-6 2.2-litre e-XDi diesel motor.

The new motor generates 178 PS and 400 Nm of torque. In addition to a standard 6-speed manual transmission, the updated SUV can also be had with a 7-speed automatic transmission sourced from Mercedes-Benz. The new version is claimed to have a CO2 emission of 184 g/km compared to the outgoing version’s 196 g/km. The autobox carries a 5 year/unlimited Km warranty.

The 2016 Rexton is equipped with all-wheel drive system complete with a low-range for off roading. The ladder frame SUV is suspended by double-wishbone with coil springs upfront and five-link rigid axle with coil springs at the rear. The EX automatic and fully loaded ELX variants benefit from a multi-link rear suspension system for improved comfort.

The prices range from 22,995 pounds (around INR 23 lakhs) to 28,995 pounds (around INR 29 lakhs).

The 2016 SsangYong Rexton is available in both 5 and 7 seat configurations. The top-end ELX is packed with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, beige-grey interior color theme, front and rear parking sensors, new leather wrapped multi-function steering wheel, Sat-Nav, heated rear seats, auto dimming rear view mirrors and so on.

While it remains to be seen if the new engine and gearbox combo will make it to India, the rest of the enhancements are likely to be introduced here eventually. Mahindra has been taking it slow with its premium brand in the country but we should be seeing new product launch activities in the coming years.
