Showcased as a concept at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo, development of upcoming Tata Motors SUV, Nexon has been heading in the right direction. This is the first time the car has been spied on the road.
Though completely camouflaged, the front design of bonnet + grille gives away the fact that this test mule is indeed the new Tata Nexon (also called as the Osprey project, internally codenamed X104). Expected to be built on the modified XO platform, there are a number of parts which Nexon has shared with upcoming Zica small car.
Compared to the concept that was showcased in 2014, the test mule is missing LED headlights and foglights in the front, alloys have been replaced by standard wheels, ventilated discs on all four wheels of the concept have been replaced by disc in the front and drum brakes at the rear. Have a look at the spy shots gallery below.
Interior spy shots confirm that none of the fancy stuff which was seen on board the concept, will be making its way to the production spec model. The contoured modern seats, suicide doors, white dashboard with fluorescent blue ambient lights, are no where to be seen. Instead, what we see in the spy shots, is an interior design which seems to be completely borrowed from the recently unveiled Zica. Dashboard features same three steering wheel as the Zica with controls, a similar centre console, design of front and rear seats too is same, and so is the legroom and space.
A sub 4 meter SUV, Nexon will compete with the likes of Ford EcoSport, upcoming Mahindra KUV100 (S101) and Maruti XA Alpha (YBA). To be offered in a choice of petrol and diesel engine options, a report earlier this year had claimed Nexon will feature a new four cylinder diesel all-aluminium 1.5 liter engine, under their new Revotorq family, which will generate 110 hp power. While the petrol version of Nexon is expected to get Zica’s 1.2 liter Revotron three cylinder which is rated at 85 PS and 114 Nm torque.
To be launched in the third quarter of 2017, a near production ready variant of the Nexon is expected to make official debut at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo in February next year, which is when we will also get a better idea about the car. Until then, have a look at what the Nexon looked like as a concept at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo.
