2016 Toyota Prius details and new images revealed

The fourth generation Toyota Prius is lighter, compact and more fuel efficient.

Toyota Prius fourth generation goes on sale in Japan in December, while in the US, it will arrive by early 2016. Though pricing is not yet disclosed, tech specs of 2016 Toyota Prius have been revealed.

New Prius receives a 1.8 liter VVT-i Atkinson cycle gasoline engine and a new electric motor coupled with lithium-ion / nickel-metal hydride batteries. Fuel efficiency with this engine stands at 2.5 liters per 100 kms while maximum thermal efficiency is also enhanced by 40% due to exhaust gas recirculation system.

The gasoline engine is capable of 98 PS power at 5,200 rpm and 142 Nm torque at 3,600 rpm. The electric motor is capable of 53 kW power output and 163 Nm torque.

2016 Toyota Prius made its official debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in early September. Based on Toyota New Global Architecture platform, the Prius measures 4,540mm in length, an increase of 60mm over its outgoing counterpart despite the fact that there is no change in wheelbase of 2,700mm. Boot capacity has also been increased from 445 liters to 502 liters.

Interiors boast of a 4.2” digital instrument panel, color headup display and new air conditioning system adjusting airflow between seats for added efficiency. On the exterior, 2016 Toyota Prius receives new headlamp and bumper design while side profile is seen with blackened out C pillar to create a floating roof.

With no pricing indications as on date, estimates put the 2016 Toyota Prius in the same price range as its current model with starting price at $22,000 (INR 14,31,945).
