New BMW 5 Series showcased in India ahead of launch

BMW claims weight reduction to the extent of 137 pounds (62 kg) on the 2017 BMW 5 Series with use of steel, aluminium and magnesium.

BMW revealed its new 5 Series sedan in October last year. This is the 7th generation of the 5 Series, one of the best selling BMW globally. The new 5er comes with more powerful engines which makes it quicker than its predecessor.

Compared to the old 5er, the 2017 BMW 5 Series is 36mm longer, 6mm wider and 2mm taller, while it sits on a 7mm longer wheelbase. Leg room for rear passengers is therefore at a premium while boot capacity has been increased to 530 liters.

The sedan is based on the CLAR – Cluster Architecture platform. Thanks to the efficient use of lightweight material, the overall weight has gone down considerably. The M Sport packing will see the inclusion of an aero kit and performance upgrades along with lower suspension and larger wheels and tyres.

In its interiors, 2017 BMW 5 Series will receive several upgrades. BMW iDrive 6.0 infotainment system with gesture controls, voice control and heads up display will be evident along with 16 speaker, 600 watt Harmon Kardon sound system. Better on board comforts, quieter interiors with sound deadening material and multi contour massage seats will be on offer.

Safety features available on the new 5 Series will be the latest in driver assistance and safety equipment with radar cruise control, lane departure warning system and lane keeping assist. Parking has been made safer through 3D surround view and ParkNow parking reservation system.

2017 BMW 5 Series will be powered by 2 petrol and 2 diesel engine options. These include a 2.0 liter, 4 cylinder offering 248 hp on the 530i while the 540i gets a 3.0 liter inline six offering 335 hp. Diesel engine options include a 2.0 liter on board the 530d while a 3.0 liter engine makes its way onto the 530d.

In India, the new 5 Series will take on the upcoming Mercedes Benz E Series LWB, Audi A6, Volvo S90 and the Jaguar XF. Showcased to customers, launch is reportedly to take place on 29th June.
