The 2017 BMW i3 electric vehicle has been unveiled with a number of improvements. Apart from a few cosmetic revisions, the electric hatchback receives a new battery with around 50% more capacity.
The old 22 KWh battery has been replaced by a 33 KWh unit which is claimed to increase the drive range from 130 km (81 miles) to 183 km (114 miles). Owing to the higher capacity, the battery takes 4.5 hours (an hour longer than old battery) on a level 2 charger to attain full charge. The larger battery has also led to a noticeable increase in the kerb weight.
The i3 continues to be available with an optional IC engine range-extender which would add a further 150 km range. The electric motor which produces 170 hp has been retained. The 650 cc twin-cylinder range extender delivers more power. The range extender variant has a 0-100 kmph time of 8 seconds while the pure EV variant manages the feat in a little over 7 seconds.
