The hatchback will go on sale in the US this fall.

General Motors has released images of the swanky new 2017 Chevrolet Cruze hatchback ahead of its first public appearance at the Detroit Auto Show 2016 (NAIAS) next week. While the older gen model spawned a hatchback variant, it was not sold in the US but the new model will definitely go on sale in Chevrolet’s home market.

Unlike its predecessor which seemed more like an afterthought, the 2017 Cruze hatchback has a proportionate styling with no awkward angles. The derivative remains faithful to the design lines of its sedan sibling all the way up to the rear quarter glass panel.

With the rear seats folded, the hatchback offers boot space of 1,190 litres.

The roofline and green house are near identical but the hatchback’s C-pillar drops steeper and shorter. A curvy rear windshield, prominent roof-mounted spoiler, leaf-shaped taillights and a sporty black bumper round off what is a sporty design.

The interior too has been derived from the second gen Cruze sedan. Equipment package includes MyLink infotainment complete with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an array of safety features.

The 2017 Chevrolet Cruze hatchback will be available only in LT and Premier trims. Like the sedan, power comes from a 1.4-litre tubrocharged petrol engine which is tuned to deliver 153 PS and 240 Nm of torque.

GM India is reportedly working on a mild facelift of the old gen Cruze sedan for this year before bringing the next gen sedan in 2017. The hatchback is not likely to visit our shores.
