2017 KTM Duke 390 rider loses life after falling off a bridge

Local media report blames the hazardous way in which the bridge has been constructed.

38 year old Pune resident, Ashutosh Phadke has been a biker all his life. Not only a fan of motorcycles, he is an equally good rider of bicycles as well as of four wheels. He has successfully taken his two wheels to the highest motorable road in the country.

Automobiles was not only his passion, but also his bread and butter. Owner of Phadke Automobiles, Ashutosh had recently purchased a brand new 2017 KTM Duke 390 motorcycle.

Last night at around 1 AM, when he was riding his Duke 390 towards Kothrud Bus Depot for a cup of tea, while he was on the Veer Savarkar flyover on Karve Road, for unknown reasons he lost his balance and the bike slipped. It is not clear as to what speed he was riding at, when he lost balance. But, the speed he was carrying, was more than what the 2.5 feet cement wall of the bridge could contain.

He then fell about 40 feet below on the road, while his bike skidded about 100 meters on the flyover. His friend, who was riding along with him on a bike, was just behind when all this happened. When he saw the bike fallen on the road and his friend missing, he stopped his bike and started searching for his friend. Soon he saw his friend lying on the road below.

The flyover from which Ashutosh had the fall.

He soon came down the flyover to help his friend. There is also a police station nearby. The cops arrived almost immediately. Soon Ashutosh was taken to a nearby hospital. On arrival, doctors admitted him in ICU and started treatment. But, around 2 AM he succumbed to his injuries.

A rider who always gave importance to riding gear, Ashutosh was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident. The helmet saved his head, but his body had received injuries. It was the internal bleeding that resulted in his death.

Earlier today, his funeral was held. Friends, family and more than 50 bikers from various biking groups in the city had arrived to pay their respects. Ashutosh is survived by his wife and two daughters.

It is not clear as to what resulted in the KTM Duke 390 losing balance. Local police suggest it could be because of the high speed he was carrying. As per local media, the accident was a result of badly maintained roads in the city. In addition to that, less than a day before the accident, Pune was lashed by thunderstorm and heavy showers, which could have made the roads even worse, and slippery than before.
