2020 Hyundai Verna engines and gearboxes
The Hyundai Verna BS6 is available with a diesel engine and two petrol engines. The base motor is a 1.5-liter naturally aspirated petrol unit (100 cc larger than the outgoing BS4 motor). It can be specified with a 6-speed manual gearbox or a CVT. Power and torque figures stand at 115 hp and 144 Nm respectively.
The high-end petrol motor is the 1.0-liter three-cylinder unit which made its Indian debut on board the Venue sub-4m SUV. The turbocharged direct injection mill is available exclusively with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT). With 120 hp and 177 Nm of torque on tap, this emerges as the most powerful engine of the lineup.
The 1.5-liter turbocharged diesel engine is tuned to deliver 115 hp and 250 Nm of torque. The motor is paired either with a standard 6-speed manual transmission or an optional 6-speed torque converter automatic unit.
2020 Hyundai Verna features
Hyundai has added several new futures at every trim level to make the mid-size sedan more appealing to prospective customers who are getting more and more interested in compact crossovers. The base S trim now receives a larger 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system (older car offered a 5.0-inch unit) with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice recognition.
In an attempt to keep the base price from inflating, the South Korean automaker has deleted a few features from the S trim such as reverse parking camera (sensors are retained), projector fog lamps, rear defogger, automatic headlamps, height adjustable driver seat, driver-side auto up/down power window, automatic climate control and cruise control.
The mid-level SX adds electric sunroof, 10.67 cm digital supervision cluster along with colour TFT MID, wireless charger, leather wrapped steering wheel and gear lever, rear privacy curtain (manual) and driver rear view monitor. The fully loaded SX(O) further adds LED headlamps, ventilated front seats, BlueLink telematic connectivity with 3 year subscription, Vehicle Stability Management, Hill Start Assist and Tyre Pressure Monitoring System. TheĀ 1.0-liter variant also receives paddle shifters, rear disc brakes and ESP.
In total, the new Verna is reported to have 18 best-in-segment features of which 12 are first-in-segment.
2020 Hyundai Verna Exterior design
The 2020 Hyundai Verna is essentially a facelift but the front fascia is all new with a prominent hexagonal grille, new LED headlamps, sleek secondary airdam and triangular foglamp enclosures. The silhouette is familiar with an arching roofline (dual-tone alloy wheels are new though). The rear fascia has also been retained more or less untouched, save for a revised bumper.
The updated sedan is available in 6 exterior colour options – Typhoon Silver, Starry Night, Titan Grey, Fiery Red, Phantom Black and Polar White.
2020 Hyundai Verna Interior
The new Hyundai Verna is equipped with a fresh dashboard, replete with a modern center console. The black dashboard receives glossy piano black trims for the AC vents and control buttons.
The Hyundai Verna facelift will not only pick up a fight against the upcoming 2020 Honda City but will also rival the Maruti Ciaz (which is a serious contender in this segment), VW Vento, Skoda Rapid and Toyota Yaris. The Verna and City will be the only models in their segment to offer diesel engine option in the BS6 era while the rest opted to go petrol-only.
Provided that the lock down implemented in India ends on April 14 as initially announced, the new version of Verna is expected to be launched towards the end of April. Hyundai might use the first 10 days to push the old BS4 stock. Yes, to compensate for the loss of business and time during the lock down, the Indian government has decided to give the automakers 10 additional days to deplete their old stock.
Soon after introducing the Verna, Hyundai India will be gearing up to world premiere the eagerly anticipated next-generation i20 premium hatchback. The new model is expected to bring a sea of changes inside out and become the new segment benchmark.
