Based on an all new platform, the new generation Mahindra Scorpio SUV has been spied on test for the first time. 2020 Mahindra Scorpio will be longer and wider than the current Scorpio. It will also be stronger and much lighter than the existing Scorpio.
Launched in 2002, Scorpio is the first proper SUV from Mahindra. It is the car which marked Mahindra’s arrival in the passenger car segment on a global stage. Until the launch of XUV500 in 2011, Scorpio was the flagship Mahindra SUV. Currently in its third generation, which was launched in 2014, the new generation will be launched by April 2020, which is when the new emission norms are going to be implemented. 2020 Mahindra Scorpio will also come with new set of engines.
The test mules of 2020 Mahindra Scorpio in the spy shots are completely camouflaged. The new grille in the front is clearly visible, and so is the revised headlight cluster. The overall design remains similar to current Scorpio.
On the inside, it will feature soft touch leather materials, leather wrap steering wheel, leather seat covers, etc. It will also get a completely new dashboard design with steering mounted controls, larger touchscreen infotainment system with Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility. Other features on offer could include electric sunroof, rear AC vents, auto AC, more cabin space as well as comfort.
Mahindra has already started working on a new 2 liter diesel engine, which will power all their new generation of cars, from Thar to the XUV500. This new 2 liter engine will be on offer in various tunes from 120 hp to 180 hp. On board the 2020 Thar, this engine is expected to deliver about 120 hp, while on the new Scorpio, it could deliver about 150-160 hp and on the 2020 XUV500, it will be in its highest tune of 180 hp. It will be more fuel efficient and refined than any of the current Mahindra diesel engine. Transmission options on offer will be 6 speed MT as well as automatic.
Just like new age Mahindra cars like Marazzo and XUV300, the 2020 Scorpio is also being developed by Mahindra’s global team of engineers which are located in the US and in India. Pininfarina design inputs will be part of the 2020 Scorpio. Expect the SUV to debut at the 2020 Auto Expo in Feb next year. Launch price of 2020 Mahindra Scorpio could range from Rs 13-21 lakhs, ex-sh. In this price range, it will lock horns with the likes of Tata Harrier, etc.
