2020 Mahindra Thar BS6 slated for November launch – Official confirmation

The 2020MY Mahindra Thar BS6 is easily one of the most awaited launches in recent Indian automotive history

It has been at least three years since the internet started seeing spy shots of the second-gen Mahindra Thar off-roader. Compared to its phased-out BS4 version (built over the Scorpio’s platform), the 2020MY Mahindra Thar BS6 is a total revamp. For starters, it sits on an all-new architecture and will be available in both petrol and diesel formats, with an automatic transmission (optional).

Throughout its development, the Indian automaker has taken key inputs from Mahindra Adventure off-road division. One can expect the new Thar to be better on highways as well in comparison to the arguably dull driving experience offered by the original model.

We have shared multiple images and videos of the upcoming 2020MY Thar ever since Mahindra started testing it on public roads. Lately, almost every Thar prototype seems production-ready under the loose camouflage. The next-gen Mahindra Thar would most likely be the most awaited launch in recent Indian automotive history.

Mahindra Thar Launch

Mahindra & Mahindra confirms that the new-gen BS6-compliant Thar will finally launch “post October” or quite possibly in the festive season. The company also shares that it is “looking forward to a very good product”. The initial launch timeline had met with huge backlogs due to COVID-19 and its nationwide lockdown protocols. Like most other OEM operating in the country, Mahindra & Mahindra could reopen its facilities only in late-May (after nearly a two-month shutdown).

Mahindra Thar Rivals

As mentioned before, the new model would be a vast improvement over its BS4 counterpart. Mahindra states that they have not set a target customer base for the 2020MY Thar, but has engineered it to be a capable product which can even suit a single-car garage. Force Motors’ Gurkha BS6 (yet to launch) would be its only rival as Maruti Suzuki does not see potential in the Jimny; another desirable compact off-roader.

Mahindra Thar Engine Choices

It is still too early to make conclusions on the new Thar’s powertrain and output. However, rumours suggest that the engine choices would include a 2.0-litre mStallion turbo petrol engine and 2.2-litre mHawk diesel engine, mated to either a 6-speed manual (standard) or a torque-converter automatic. Of course, higher trims will get 4×4.

2020 Mahindra Thar Features

There are no official notes regarding its features and equipment. Yet, spy shots reveal that the new 2020MY Mahindra Thar BS6 gets LED tail lamps, LED DRLs, reasonably-large touchscreen, climate control, forward-facing rear seats, cruise control, rear disc brakes, removable hardtop (almost like in the all-new Ford Bronco) and more.
