Bookings for the new Mahindra Thar are expected to commence a little after the world premiere in August
2020 Mahindra Thar, the next generation off-roader which has been testing extensively for a prolonged period of time will finally be unveiled on August 15. Mahindra has officially revealed this information today.
As evident from the numerous spy shots we have already come across, the new Mahindra Thar is visibly larger than the outgoing model and looks decidedly modern without compromising on its instantly recognizable boxy design. The sense of width has increased quite significantly, giving the off-roader an enhanced road presence.
The new Thar is expected to be available in both soft- and hard-top variants as both have been spied previously. Some of the prototypes also featured conventional forward facing rear seats unlike the current model’s longitudinally oriented benches. The new Mahindra Thar aims to offer an upmarket experience with its all-new dashboard which is a far cry from the exiting car’s utilitarian unit. The design is fresh and there are lot of creature comforts that were missing earlier. The most significant addition is the touchscreen infotainment system, new instrument cluster with MID and multi-function steering wheel. The front bucket seats have gotten plusher.
In short, the 2021 Mahindra Thar wants to appeal not only to the off-road enthusiasts but family buyers as well. The interior is one of the most improved aspects of the new generation model.
Under the skin
Based on a new ladder frame chassis which is expected to meet the crash test norms, the new Mahindra Thar will continue to have off-road prowess as its USP. One can expect the SUV to have better torsional rigidity, higher ground clearance and more extreme approach and departure angles compared to its predecessor.
In terms of safety, complying with the latest regulations, the off-roader will come with front airbags, ABS, speed alert system, front passenger seat belt warning and reverse parking sensor.
Details about the powertrain will be confirmed during the unveil. It is being reported that the 2.2-liter diesel engine will continue it its BS6 avatar and a 2.0-liter petrol engine will joint the lineup.
The new Mahindra Thar is a significant step up compared to the outgoing model. So, expect the price inflation to be significant as well. The off-roader will continue to lock horns with the Force Gurkha which is also preparing to graduate to next generation soon.
