2020 Royal Enfield Classic, Thunderbird, Bullet in the making – More refined, Lesser vibrations

With Harley Davidson and Triumph working intently on establishing their presence in the small and medium displacement motorcycle segments, Royal Enfield can’t afford to rest on its laurels. The Indian retro-classic motorcycle maker is working on several products and platforms to guard its leadership in the highly lucrative segment.

Of the assortment of architectures that are currently under development at Royal Enfield’s UK R&D center with inputs from India, the J architecture which underpins the next generation of existing model lineup is considered to be most important as it would help the brand continue its stronghold amidst new competition.

According to ET Auto, the J architecture would spawn BS-VI versions of the Classic, Thunderbird, Himalayan, and the evergreen Bullet. We expect the new platform to offer several new features to keep pace with the segment standards and to comply with the new safety norms. It goes without saying that the new range of Royal Enfield motorcycles will offer dual-channel ABS as standard feature.

The BS-VI emission norms would dictate significant updates to the engines. The carburetor is likely to be completely phased out in favour of the clearly superior fuel injection system. Of course, these new updates would be accompanied with some styling tweaks and new choice of retro-classic colour options.

90% motorcycles sold in 350-500cc segment in India are Royal Enfield’s

In the immediate future, the company is gearing up to launch the eagerly awaited Interceptor 650 and Continental GT 650. These motorcycles would help RE take the fight to HD and Triumph’s current entry level territory.

In addition to developing a comprehensive range of new motorcycles across different segments, the Eicher-owned Indian two wheeler brand is also focusing on hiring the right kind of top management personnel to lead the operations in critical zones like Asia-pacific, North America and Latin America where demand for medium displacement motorcycles are on the rise.
