2020 Yamaha MT15 BS6 in new colour, rear radial tyre – Debuts

Yamaha India unveiled the BS6 compliant MT-15 naked motorcycle today alongside the updated Fascino and new Ray ZR 125 FI. While official launch is expected sometime next month, Yamaha has revealed what’s new on the updated motorcycle.

The Yamaha MT-15 BS6 now gets a new Ice Fluo Vermilion color theme which involves white bodywork and red alloy wheels. Apart from that, the updated version also benefits from standard rear radial tyre and a side-stand engine cut off feature. Of course, Yamaha has worked on the engine to improve its emission performance.

The power and torque figures of the BS6-ready engine has not been revealed yet but it is reasonable to assume that the 155 cc liquid-cooled engine produces same amount power and torque as it does on board the recently launched fully-faired YZF-R15 V3.0 BS6.

At 18.6 hp and 14.1 Nm of torque, the BS6 version is 0.7 hp and 0.6 Nm short on its BS4 counterpart. The transmission continues to be a 6-speed unit which employs a slipper clutch. The 2020 Yamaha MT-15 receives a tweaked secondary reduction gear for better acceleration.

The rest of the motorcycle has been carried forward without any changes. The salient features include LED headlight and tailight, front and rear discs with single-channel ABS, single-piece seat and a fully digital instrument cluster.

To recap, the Yamaha MT-15 for India is equipped with regular telescopic front fork (global model sports USD fork) and mono-shock suspension. The frame is derived from the time-proven YZF-R15 V3.0.

The current version of Yamaha MT-15 is sold at INR 1.36 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). We expect the updated one to be dearer by around INR 5,000. In addition to being positioned as a naked alternative to the R15, the MT-15 also competes with the KTM Duke 125 as an entry point into the world of sport motorcycles.

Yamaha has opened its first Blue Store outlet in Chennai to promote its premium lineup of motorcycles and scooters. By next year, the company is planning to open 100 such outlets across the country. The MT-15 and Ray ZR 125 FI will be one of the important products to be sold under the new premium retail chain.
