2021 Mercedes S Class is World’s First Car to Offer Airbags for Rear Passengers

The new S Class will pack a lot of innovative technologies on both safety and ADAS front

The Mercedes S Class has always been a pioneer of automotive technology for decades. Every time the flagship luxury limousine progresses to new generation, it redefines the benchmark by bringing in plethora of innovation. The all new Mercedes S Class is slated to make its world premiere on September 2 and naturally it has got the entire automotive world excited.

New pieces of information about the 2021 Mercedes S Class have been trickling down on the internet and the latest update reveals that it will be the first car in the world to be equipped with airbags for rear passengers to protect them from front crash.

Providing such a safety feature to rear seat occupants is not as straightforward as the front airbags because the system needs to be robust enough to take into account child occupants as well. The rear airbags will work in conjunction with the new Belt Bag, an inflatable safety belt. The system is expected to improve the rear occupant safety significantly.

Another path breaking safety innovation that the 2021 Mercedes S Class will bring is the Pre-Safe Impulse Side function. It employs radar to recognize an imminent side impact and move the occupants towards the centre of vehicle by means of air cushions in the seats while also increasing the ride height by means of Active Body Control suspension system so that the stiffer structures bear the brunt of the impact. That’s a brilliant use of existing on-board sensors and active suspension technology!

In short, the 2021 Mercedes S Class will feature plethora of new technologies, drive assistance systems, comfort and safety features. The German luxury seems poised to retain its wide acclamation as the world’s best car.

The new S Class features a completely fresh interior design which is dominated by massive displays and haptic surfaces instead of traditional buttons. Highlights include a fully digital colour instrument console and a centre console made almost fully for a touchscreen.

The 2021 Mercedes S Class will come with a range of engine options most of which will benefit from a hybrid system. For the first time, the flagship Mercedes will offer a pure electric variant called the EQ S which is expected down the line. The new car will be entering our market sometime next year.
