The US-spec 2021 Toyota Camry promises high sales figures while the sportier Toyota Corolla Apex Edition is limited to 6,000 units
Starting with the 2021MY Toyota Camry, the Japanese automaker’s popular mid-size sedan has been a bestseller in North America for 18 consecutive years. In terms of styling, the car does not boast of a major revamp over its previous version but a host of equipment upgrades. The sedan is offered in six trims: LE, XLE, SE, SE Nightshade, XSE and TRD.
The first two are general comfort-focused options while the remaining three focuses a bit on sportiness (mostly by looks). It comes in four new colours: Blue Streak Metallic, Ice Edge, Midnight Black Metallic and Supersonic Red.
One of the biggest updates on the 2021MY Toyota Camry is its improved Safety Sense 2.5 Plus suite. The pre-collision safety system (with pedestrian detention) can detect cyclists and now works much better in low-light conditions. Intersection Support, an added functionality, allows drivers to do worry-free commute through towns and narrow roads by warning, or even automatically braking, when unexpected oncoming traffic is detected. Other features include Emergency Steering Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane-Keep Assist and more.
The very first Camry generation went on sale almost 40 years ago. In our market, the car is available only in a hybrid avatar. The Indian-spec 2019MY Toyota Camry Hybrid is significantly different than its American counterpart and carries a price tag of roughly Rs 39 lakh ex-showroom
On the other hand, the 2021MY Toyota Corolla Apex Edition is a sportier version — though not TRD-level sporty — of its regular ‘compact sedan’ form (or ‘D-segment’ in India). Based on SE and XSE trims, annual production is limited to just 6,000 units. The sportiness is not limited to its aesthetics but also extends to components such as stiffer suspension, lighter wheels, etc. It rides 15mm lower as well. There are three colour choices: Cement, Super White and Black Sand Pearl.
