New-gen Verna gets a comprehensive range of updates, featuring a sportier profile, more powerful turbo petrol motor and multiple segment-first features
Hyundai Verna has been a popular choice in mid-size sedan segment. It has consistently featured in the list of top three bestsellers in this space. However, launch of new rivals such as Skoda Slavia is posing challenges. In CY 2022, Verna was trailing behind Honda City and Skoda Slavia in annual sales numbers.
Hyundai will be looking to achieve better results with new-gen Verna, which is scheduled to launch on March 21. Ahead of that, the sedan has arrived at the dealer for staff training. First undisguised images of the interiors have now leaked. Bookings are currently open and can be done by paying a token amount of Rs 25,000. New Verna could retail in the price range of Rs 10 lakh to Rs 19 lakh.
New-gen Verna gets sportier
Just a quick glance is enough to reveal that new-gen Verna is a lot sportier than its predecessor. It appears that there’s some level of design inspiration from Hyundai Elantra that is available in international markets. One of the key updates is horizontal LED positioning lamps and full-width LED DRLs. This is a segment-first feature, which works to improve the sedan’s look and feel.
Other key features of new-gen Verna include multi-barrel LED headlights and parametric grille design. Side profile looks quirky, distinguishable with its sculpted panelling and intense character lines. At rear, new Verna has edgy tail lamps with an LED light bar.
Being longer, wider and with a longer wheelbase, new Verna is expected to have a strong street presence. Interiors are expected to be roomier. New Verna will have a boot space of 528 litres, which is biggest among all mid-size sedans.
Inside, one of the segment-first features is switchable type infotainment and climate controller. It improves accessibility, as the interface can be changed from AC to infotainment control and vice-versa with just a press of a button. Other premium features available with new-gen Verna include an integrated 10.25-inch HD audio video navigation system and digital cluster. There’s an 8-speaker Bose premium sound system that promises best-in-class acoustic experience. ADAS has also been introduced with new Verna.
Verna new turbo petrol motor
For folks who prioritize performance, new-gen Verna has the choice of a new 1.5-litre turbo petrol motor. It is the most powerful in mid-size sedan segment, generating 158 bhp of max power and 253 Nm of peak torque. Transmission options include 6-speed manual and 7-speed DCT. This new engine will be replacing the 1.4-litre turbo petrol motor across several Hyundai and Kia models such as Creta, Seltos and Carens.
Second engine option for new Verna is the 1.5-litre MPi petrol engine. It makes 113.4 bhp / 144 Nm and is mated to either a 6-speed manual transmission or intelligent variable transmission (IVT). This engine will be suitable for folks who are looking for improved fuel efficiency.
