Mercedes-Benz has officially unveiled the 2027 S-Class facelift, giving its flagship luxury sedan the most extensive update of its current generation. The refresh brings a stronger visual identity, a heavily digitalised cabin, new software architecture and a wide range of electrified powertrains – including a V8 that survives despite tightening global emission norms. Mercedes claims that over 50 percent of the car has been newly developed, updated or refined, underlining how significant this facelift is for the brand’s most important model.
Exterior updates: Illuminated grille, star-themed lighting
Visually, the 2027 S-Class gets a more commanding road presence. The front grille is now around 20 percent larger and, for the first time, illuminated, featuring three-dimensional chrome star elements. The iconic Mercedes star on the bonnet can also be illuminated, adding to the night-time drama.
The lighting signature has been updated at both ends. The new DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps now feature a twin-star motif, while the redesigned LED tail lamps also incorporate star-shaped elements, reinforcing brand identity. Mercedes has also added a light projection feature that displays ‘Mercedes-Benz’ lettering on the ground near the doors when occupants enter or exit the car.
DIGITAL LIGHT upgraded for better visibility
The facelift introduces the latest generation of DIGITAL LIGHT with micro-LED technology. Mercedes says the high-resolution illumination field is around 40 percent larger than before, improving night-time visibility while also enhancing efficiency. The system adapts lighting patterns using camera and navigation data, further strengthening safety credentials.
Interior overhaul: Screens take centre stage
Inside, the S-Class takes a decisive step towards a fully digital luxury experience. Traditional wood-heavy layouts make way for the new MBUX Superscreen, which spans the dashboard and integrates:
– A 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
– A 14.4-inch central infotainment display
– A 12.3-inch front passenger screen
All of this runs on Mercedes’ new MB.OS (Mercedes-Benz Operating System), a centralised software architecture that enables faster processing, deeper system integration and extensive over-the-air updates.
Mercedes has also reworked the dashboard, centre console and steering wheel. Interestingly, physical controls make a partial comeback on the steering wheel, responding to customer feedback that touch-only interfaces were not ideal in daily use.
AI-powered MBUX and rear-seat tech
The latest MBUX system now integrates generative AI, including ChatGPT-based conversational capability, allowing more natural voice interactions via the “Hey Mercedes” virtual assistant.
Rear-seat comfort remains a core strength of the S-Class. The facelift offers:
– Dual 13.1-inch rear entertainment screens
– Detachable rear control tablets
– Video conferencing support for business users
– Enhanced ambient lighting and comfort features
Mercedes continues to position the S-Class as a true “boardroom on wheels”, especially in long-wheelbase and First-Class rear-seat configurations.
MANUFAKTUR programme expanded
Personalisation has been taken to another level. The updated MANUFAKTUR programme now offers over 150 exterior paint colours and more than 400 interior combinations, allowing buyers to create highly individualised S-Class specifications.
Engine options: Wide mix of petrol, diesel, hybrid and V8
The 2027 S-Class facelift is offered with an extensive range of powertrains, depending on market:
– S 450 / S 500: 3.0-litre inline-six mild-hybrid petrol engines
– S 580 4MATIC: Twin-turbo V8 mild-hybrid, producing over 530 hp – a notable highlight at a time when V8s are rapidly disappearing
Diesel variants (select markets): S 350 d and S 450 d
Plug-in hybrids:
– S 450 e
– S 580 e, offering a substantial electric-only driving range for urban use
Rear-wheel steering (up to 10 degrees), AIRMATIC air suspension and optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL continue to be offered, maintaining the S-Class’s focus on ride comfort and refinement.
Safety and driver assistance
Safety remains a defining pillar of the S-Class. The facelift benefits from next-generation MB.DRIVE assistance systems, enhanced sensor hardware and updated computing architecture. Features include advanced adaptive cruise control, lane assist, evasive steering support and improved parking assistance with 360-degree camera functionality.
Mercedes-Benz has opened order books for the updated S-Class in Europe from January 30, 2026, with market-specific launches to follow. Pricing and variant strategies will vary by region. With the 2027 facelift, Mercedes-Benz is clearly repositioning the S-Class for a future where digital experience and software matter as much as craftsmanship and comfort. While purists may miss the old-school luxury feel, the updated S-Class ensures it stays competitive against newer, tech-heavy rivals – without giving up hallmark strengths like comfort, presence and power.
